The race started in Benvie Gardens in Howick and finished at the Karkloof Country Club, with runners setting off in batches from 6am. A few years ago, Neil underwent major surgery on his back and was told by the doctors that he would never run again. He had participated in the Comrades five times previously and had been running for many years prior to the operation. He was determined to prove to himself that he can and will run again and decided on the Karkloof race as his goal.

Weather conditions were not ideal and many runners battled running through midday in the heat. Neil said it was the toughest running experience he has ever had besides his back op recovery but is delighted to have achieved this goal after everything he has been through.
“I would like to thank my support crew and everyone who wished me well and was part of my journey, especially my wife Vanessa who has been my number one supporter,” said Neil.
