Amanzimtoti bowlers perform exceptionally well at district masters competition

They had to play five gruelling games of singles in their sections over two days against the best in the district.

AMANZIMTOTI Bowling Club (ABC) was delighted when four of its members were invited to play in the district masters competition on the weekend of August 21 and 22, which sees top bowlers from the Port Natal district face off against each other.

Doreen Salmond and Jane Coetzee, both current district players, were selected for the women’s veterans competition, and Susan Nel, retired Protea player, national elite coach and national selector, for the women’s open.

Dion Audie, district player, was invited to play in the men’s open. They had to play five gruelling games of singles in their sections over two days against the best in the district.

In the end, Doreen walked away with bronze in the women’s veterans.

The weather was good for the women’s monthly trips game on Wednesday, August 18, and the winners were Jeanne Alexander, Delysia Mitchley and Jane Coetzee. Pam Chalder-Royle, Sue Welch and Noreen Butler were second, with Nicky Stirzaker, Tokkie de Kock and Jackie Holdrick taking the second session prize.

Greg McLeod and Adie Fuller were the winners of the men’s monthly 2-4-2 on Thursday, August 19. Claiming the second spot were Terry Morgan and William Sithole, while Eric Klopper and Barry Bush took second session.

The women’s mutton 4s were played on Sunday, August 22, and the winners for the day were Julie Sutherland, Tokkie de Kock, Amanda Ninow and Cathy Badenhorst. In second place were Michelle Pitchers, Lynn Joubert, Lesley Stephens-Viviers and Lesley Levy. The second session went to Nicky Stirzaker, Leonie Mills, Hilary Lindsay and Denise Bingham.

In the men’s mutton, the winners were Vince Phaal, Rob Green, Terry Morgan and Trevor Zulch. In second place were Linden Cooper, Phil Whitton, Ray Robinson and Barry Bush. Greg McLeod, Clive Frank, Mike Roberts and Brian Masters took second session.

At TGIF, there were three winners of the special carry-over 100 board, Leigh Callaghan, Fred Rautenbach and Al McGregor. Honorary life member, Liz Morgan-Davies’ name came out in the attendance draw, but as she was not present the winnings will go up to R250 next week.

Mike Roberts’ number was drawn in the key draw, but he was unable to find the right key, so the jackpot will roll over to R6 305 next time with 22 keys to choose from.

The first round of the Port Natal men and women’s trips will start on Saturday, August 28. A remarkable 12 men and women’s teams will play at Amanzimtoti. ABC has seven men’s teams and six women’s teams entered.

Birthday greetings goes to Clifford Hole, Dennis Hughes, Jaylene Fagan, Martin de Gray Birch, Steve Woor and Shane Wilkinson.
