Amanzimtoti Bowling Club’s Jane through to district bowls semis

Those interested in taking a markers course should submit their names promptly to the club manager as places are limited.

CONGRATULATIONS to Jane Coetzee of Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC), who put in a winning performance to progress to the semi-finals of the Port Natal women’s open singles, and also to Lynn Joubert, who was knocked out in the quarter finals after a blistering game which she lost by a narrow margin.

The last three games in the round-robin section of ABC’s men’s novice singles have now been played. New bowler, Eddie Baker, was down in the first half of his game against Kevin Lindsay, but fought back strongly in the second half to win the game.

Trevor Osborne maintained his lead throughout to beat Danny Ross, and although Shaun Fagan started out very strong in his game against Shane Wilkinson, he seemed to hit a roadblock half way though and Shane piled on the pressure to take the win. The two at the top of the log, Trevor and Eddie, will now meet in the final game to decide the men’s novice champion for the year.

The annual men vs womens competition was held over the long weekend. It had been another lockdown casualty as it could not be held in its usual time-slot of 16 December due to Covid-19 restrictions. The trophy, together with bragging rights, went to the men this year with a very resounding win of 23 points to 13. Thanks to Di and Ray Robinson, the main sponsors of the day, where everyone wins a prize.

Susan Nel, Delysia Mitchley and Amanda Ninow were the winners of the monthly Victory Kwik Spar women’s trips, with Ann Whitton, Hilary Lindsay and Lesley Levy in second place. The second session went to Vera Broskie, Heather Brown and Jacqui Fouché. The continued sponsorship of Alan Hawkins of Victory Kwik Spar is greatly appreciated.

Vish Studinski and Barry Buckland were the winners of the men’s monthly 2-4-2. Ian Crouch and Barry Bush came second. Lofty van Tonder and Ray Robinson won the second session prize.

In the monthly big chicks competition, the winners were Ann Whitton, Julie Sutherland, Paul Davies and Amanda Ninow. Greg McLeod, Clive Frank, Andrew Walker and Tokkie de Kock were second and the second session prize went to Adie Fuller, Ashley McIntyre, Vish Studinski and Elmarie Young.

This weekend will be the men and women’s mutton competitions on Saturday, 27 March, and the first three rounds of the Port Natal mixed pairs on Sunday, 28 March. Don’t forget to enter your teams for the Easter 4’s mixed tournament taking place on 3 and 4 April.

Those interested in taking a markers course should submit their names promptly to the club manager as places are limited. It will be held on 18 April at Westville Country Club. See the notice board for details.

Burgers and bowls will be held on Thursday, 1 April, at 5.30pm and non-bowlers are invited to try the game. The cost is R30 and includes the use of bowls. Burgers will be on sale after the game for R35. The only requirement is that you wear flat-soled shoes.

Birthday greetings for this week go to Alec Stirzaker and Mike Pitchers.

Finally, the club sends its deepest sympathies to Doreen Salmond and her family on the passing of her husband Brian.
