Amanzimtoti Bowling Club hosts Hypersure mixed trips finals this weekend

A record number of 22 Toti members will compete in the Port Natal open singles and four in the veterans singles.

AT the end of round four of the Hypersure mixed trips being played at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) at the moment, the leaders of plate A are Jeanne Alexander, Mike Groom and Ray Robinson.

The field now splits and Ann Whitton, Cleve Hein and Lesley Levy are at the top of plate B. The final two rounds will take place on Saturday, 13 March, starting at noon.

Part of the Port Natal singles will be played at ABC on Sunday, 14 March, and the club is proud that a record number of 22 Toti members will compete in the open singles and four in the veterans singles.

Several honours board competitions are reaching their final stages at ABC. In the men 4 semi-finals, Lofty van Tonder, Mike Groom, Martin Birch and Fred Welch came out with ‘guns blazing’ to take a strong win against Adie Fuller, Carl van Heerden, Barry Buckland and Danny Ross.

In the other semi-final which was a close game Clive Frank, Brian Masters, Cleve Hein and Fred Rautenbach managed to beat Peter Callaghan, Dave McMillan, Terry Morgan and William Sithole by one shot on the last end.

Good bowling to both Lofty’s and Clive’s teams when they face off in the finals.

In one of the semi-finals of the women’s drawn 4s Marion Crouch, Talla Stephens-Viviers, Jane Coetzee and Sue Blount had a really good day at the office and took a strong win over Nicky Stirzaker, Michelle Pitchers, Leigh

Callaghan and Lesley Levy; and in the men’s novice singles Trevor Osborne was also in winning form, beating both Shaun Fagan and Shane Wilkinson.

Winners of the women’s John Dory two-four-two were Elmarie Young and Amanda Ninow.

Runners-up were Leonie Mills and Hilary Lindsay, and Marion Crouch and Nicky Stirzaker won the second session prize.

The men’s trips were won by Greg McLeod, Adie Fuller and Barry Bush, with Ian Crouch, Lofty van Tonder and John Mitchley in second place. Glen Scorgie, Peter Callaghan and Dave McMillan took the second session prize.

At TGIF the members’ attendance draw was won by Michelle Pitchers so the prize will go back to R100 next week.

The 100 board was won by Peter Callaghan. Doug Joubert’s number came out in the key draw, but unfortunately, the right key was not found, so the jackpot will go up to R1 210 next week with 39 keys.

Something novel to look forward to for next month will be the Easter 4s nominated tournament on the weekend of 3 and 4 April.

Teams must comprise two men and two women and the format will change for each round of the competition to include singles, pairs, trips and fours.

There are great prizes to be won, and teas and a lunch are included in the entry fee. Birthday greetings this week go to Andrew Pearce.

Finally, if you are feeling a little stir-crazy after lockdown, consider trying your hand at bowls.

It is a sociable outdoor sport that promotes health and well-being and free coaching is provided. Contact ABC on 031-903-3857 for details.
