AAC runners ready to race the legends

It is set to stage on Sunday, 14 June, and entry is free to all South African runners who entered the 2020 Comrades Marathon.

Runners will be excited to note that they can tackle the first virtual Comrades Marathon, Race the Comrades Legends. CMA guaranteed finishers a medal for all those who compete and finish the virtual race. It is set to stage on Sunday, 14 June, and entry is free to all South African runners who entered the 2020 Comrades Marathon.

Local runner, Larin Labuschagne, 53, has run and successfully completed four comrades marathons, including the first ‘back to back’ run in 2004/ 2005. She will also be participating in the virtual race.

“I was disappointed to hear that this year’s Comrades marathon was cancelled but in light of the Covid-19 pandemic it was the right decision. Fortunately, the Comrades association has come up with ‘Race the Legends’ which is a virtual race which one can enter and run in their garden or neighbourhood and the distances range from 5km to the full 90km so all is not lost. I am going to participate in the 21,1km event on 14 June, the day Comrades would have been run.”

When asked how she is keeping fit and active during the pandemic, Larin said, “During the first five weeks of lockdown I ran numerous laps on a 250m course in my garden. Fortunately, I have been able to train further afield since moving to level four and now level three. I have also been playing badminton to keep fit. Comrades is an incredible journey of self discovery, self discipline, determination and motivation. The comraderie on the day brings people from all walks of life together, irrespective of race, gender or political affiliation and makes one proud to be South African. The support along the route is infectious and goes a long way to spur the runners on. All in all the Comrades is an amazing race,” she added.

Meanwhile, captain of Amanzimtoti Athletics Club, Warren Gibson said, “June 14 was supposed to be an exciting and nervous day as many runners were going to take on the Comrades Marathon 2020. As all knows this event has been cancelled due to Covid-19. I was sad to hear the news but think it is for the better as some runners have picked up injuries and others still needed to qualify. Runners have more time to get themselves ready and prepared for the 2021 Comrades Marathon, as many have not had enough time to train due to the lockdown and restrictions. Many runners still needed to qualify for the Comrades Marathon. Let’s hope 2021 will be a bigger and better one, injury free year for many runners.”
