“Balance is the key to succeeding in any sport.” These are the sentiments of 14-year-old Aphiwe Khuzwayo who dreams to become the next rugby star.

The youngster achieved the sportsman of the year award at Doon Heights Primary School last year and best rugby player accolade. The Grade 7 learner plays both rugby and soccer however, he prefers rugby. Some of his most enjoyable moments on the field has been participating in the Doon Heights Primary rugby sevens, rugby twelves and participating at a tournament at the Sharks academy.

Speaking to the SUN, the talented young man said, “Rugby is my favourite sport and I am very good at it. I play in the position of outside centre. The tournaments are always fun however, they can sometimes be very challenging. It is important to be physically and mentally fit because of this.”

“I train one to two hours every day. Now that we are in lockdown, my schoolwork has to come first and I try to train in my free time. Studying and gyming should be balanced because you cannot do one without the other. Mathematics is my favourite subject because I am good at it,” he added.

The 14-year-old Toti resident also thanks his family, friends and teachers for all their support. “My message during the lockdown is to always stay indoors when you can and study hard. I miss all of my loved ones very much,” he added.
