[WATCH] Hockey coach inspires teammates

Along with the girl’s hockey team, the coach of two years had a ball of a time with their teammates virtually.

With the hope of bringing smiles and joy to the youth, Ruben Daniel Myburgh who is the sports coach at Kingsway High School decided to participate in a viral internet challenge, recently.

Along with the girl’s hockey team, the coach of two years had a ball of a time with their teammates virtually.

Ruben who was inspired to make the video said, “I want to empower the youth to stay active during the lockdown and encourage unity as a team even through social distancing. The main goal was just to have fun. Learners should not get into the lifestyle of not being productive during the day. Set yourself goals and tasks to do and try your best to complete them. You will surprise yourself at the end of the week how much you achieved.”

He believes that it is of the utmost importance that learners find time to be active during the lockdown.

“It’s important to stay fit and active. Imagine getting back to school and you out of breath just climbing the stairs. Try the 10s challenge everyday as a good starter. 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, 10 burpees and 10 laps around your garden. Every week add 5 more. Another tip is use your environment to your advantage, whether you live in a flat or a complex, it doesn’t matter. There will always be a floor. Find a ball, use the objects around you, and create your own obstacle course. You’ll improve your skills and your hand-eye coordination. Just make sure you don’t annoy your parents or neighbours,” he said.

When asked how he is keeping busy during lockdown, Ruben said, “I’m investing time in myself, physically by doing home workouts and mentally by attending webinars, online courses and listening to audiobooks.”
