Amanzimtoti rugga player relishing start of season

I enjoy being in a sport that teaches you teamwork, discipline and the physical side of it.

A young Amanzimtoti rugby player is looking forward to the start of this season after being selected for the KZN U12A team last year. This was the first time Josh Grant, 12, who does his schooling at Glenwood, made the cut for the provioncial team.

“I was very proud of myself and so happy (to be selected). I worked really hard towards it and it’s always nice to see hard work pay off. This was the first time selected for the KZN team, but I’ve played for the IPT Sharks (club rugby) team for the last three years in different age groups.”

The Grade 7 learner was disappointed when their KZN U12A tour was cancelled, but they got to play against the KZN U12B team at Kings Park in the Shark Tank. “This was a dream come true, running onto the field and playing there.
“I started playing rugby four years ago after I watched it on TV with my dad and it looked like fun. I enjoy being in a sport that teaches you teamwork, discipline and the physical side of it.”

Asked what he reckons makes him such a good rugby player, Josh replied: “I train hard and always give my best. My coaches at Glenwood Prep have really helped me become a much better rugby player. They are always pushing us to be the best we can be and I’m very grateful to them for the guidance and support.”

Josh play hooker in rugby and also enjoys hockey and cricket. “I haven’t made any provincial sides for hockey or cricket yet, but I’ve played for the invitational cricket side at KZN trials for the last two years.”

His hobbies include deepsea and trout fishing, art and reading. “On the weekends I love going to the beach or doing anything fun outdoors. At this stage, I can’t pick whether I enjoy rugby or cricket more, as I love both equally. I can’t wait for the start of rugby season. I get goose bumps just talking about it.

An excited Josh in his provincial colours.

“I hope to make the KZN U13A side this year as I have been training hard towards it, but there are a lot of talented boys out there. It’s my dream to play in the Craven Week and get my KZN blazer, and one day become a professional rugby player and play for my country.”
