Amanzimtoti United chairman tackles soccer season

For the past two-and-a-half years, Zenzo’s passion did not fade and he has remained committed to ensuring the best possible future for the club.

Amanzimtoti United Football Club’s chairman, Zenzo Ncube, is excited to kick off this year’s season. The soccer fanatic began his journey at the club almost six years ago, when he took on the role as a coach at the time. His talent and passion was instantly noted when he became a committee member.
He then moved onto the position of vice-chairman for a few months before being voted in as chairman. For the past two-and-a-half years, Zenzo’s passion did not fade and he has remained committed to ensuring the best possible future for the club.

From a young age, he had an undying love for soccer and said, “I grew up on the soccer field and if people would look for me, my parents would say that I’m probably on the soccer field,” he chuckled. When asked what are some of the duties he undertakes, he said, “There is a lot of work involved in being chairman. Some of my duties include being a general overseer, chairing committee meetings, chairing at various sporting bodies, representing the club and you have to fully understand the mission of the club. You have to ensure that the ship you are running is steering in the right direction. In addition to this, you must be a good listener because you have to deal with disciplinary issues and deliberations, while adhering to the constitution of the club.”

For this season, the 42-year-old is looking to make improvements on the playing field as well improving the infrastructure.

“We need a detailed way to ensure there is unity in the club, not only in the club members, but also parents and supporters. Therefore, I developed a code of conduct for players, coaches and parents so, whenever we conduct business on the field, we ensure that we have respect at all times. We now have flood lights that allow us to play night games as well. We also beefed up the five-a-side tournament which began with 25 teams initially, we now have about 120 teams, that on its own is a big improvement. We have a lot more financial gain. Recently a new pergola was installed after we realised that parents and supporters didn’t have any setting to watch the matches, which boosts a 100 per cent waterproof shaded cloths and a braai area for socialising.”

Another big change that the club saw the hiring of fully qualified coaches to help the club perform better.
One of the challenges he faces is the lack of sponsorship, “We find ourselves having to do things in dribs-and-drabs to ensure we have some financial backup. We need the assistance from the community.”
