New figure skating club opens in Amanzimtoti

The club offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills.

Figure skating instructors, Wendy Alderton and Marco van der Hammen are opening a new figure skating club at Galleria Ice Rink on Tuesday, 4 February.

Having established and steered the Toti Seals club since 2012, former Natal and Springbok figure skater, Wendy and her husband, former Northern Transvaal figure skater and administrator, Marco have established the Flying Camel Figure Skating Club (FCFSC) to offer opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills. Some of the areas will include free skate, interpretive skating, ice dance and synchronised skating.

“We achieved a lot of success, getting skaters to provincial and national level, but it is now time for a new challenge,” said the couple.

The club will operate every Tuesday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, with registration open from 5pm. The club follows the official South African Figure Skating Association (SAFSA) grading programme, which comprises three pre-beginner, one beginner and 14 ‘grades’ which teaches figure skating skills in a group format in a progressive and sequential manner. Certificates are awarded after the successful completion of each grade.

The club also follows an ‘adult skate’ curriculum – based on international programmes – which enable those who are older, but still young at heart to participate in a fast-growing sport for adults.

“At the club’s official opening on Tuesday, 4 February, a number of our current skaters will perform routines to demonstrate what figure skating is all about.” For more information, call Marco on 082-499-8149 or Wendy on 063-790-8493.
