Get squashed at Amanzimtoti Summer League

He has made the KZN team for the last five years and was the SA top junior player while at school.

With all sports club gearing up for a new season, Amanzimtoti Squash Club is no different. The club invites the toti public to join in its Summer League, which is open to non-members and smashes off on 10 February. Players need to be registered with Christine Carol on 071-606-2850 by the end of January. The league consist of one match a week for a total of five weeks.

Club champ Mike Hutchings, 29, is unfortunately having to look elsewhere to continue contesting the First League, due to a lack of team members at Toti. “I might have to go play elsewhere such as Kloof or Crusaders if I want to stay in the league.” He also plays First league in Pietermaritzburg and capped a good last season with 11 wins from 18 matches.

He has made the KZN team for the last five years and was the SA top junior player while at school. Mike was born in Port Elizabeth and moved to Toti while in primary school. He attended Athlone Park Primary School and Kingsway High School until Grade 8 when he was poached by Glenwood for his prowess on the sqush court.

“I started playing when I was nine or 10-years-old. My dad Kevin played league and my brother Gareth played league in the Eastern Cape. I guess I just picked it up watching them. I’m naturally good, but lazy. It’s been said my racket skills are some of the best in KZN and if I work on my fitness, I could become one of the top 10 players in SA. I am competitive and it’s something I enjoy.”

Mike also swings a golf club from time to time and sits on a 15 handicap. He has won the Toti club champs eight times and could have racked up more except for a committee ruling that you have to play for the club in order to be eligible, which eliminated him for three years.

Last year he won five out five provincial matches and thanks to him and a teammate who did the same, elevated KZN back into the A section. He is next in action in the Super league at Crusaders, starting on 4 February, which is a pre-season tournament for all league players. The tournament consists of six rounds played on a Tuesday night over six weeks.
