Amanzimtoti gymnasts hit the stars

The girls have practiced hard to perfect their routine for two hours a week since July.

Four young Toti gymnasts made their coach and club proud after they won the ball group event at the National Gymnastics Games at the Durban University of Technology at the weekend.

Amy Dickin, Erin McCalgan, Danielle Chandler and Emma Frank, U11 and U13 members of Fusion Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, held their nerve against strong opposition in the open category to finish on top after their routine and improve on their second place at the qualifier in August.

The girls have practiced hard to perfect their routine for two hours a week since July and deserved their first place.
Coach and club leader, Jess Odendaal, who also judged at the games, was immensely proud of her young charges. “I didn’t judge the open ball group and I couldn’t see the judges’ scores, so it was a nice surprise when my girls were called up at the prizegiving.

“We had another group of four girls competing and then all eight did individual routines. They all did good, but the competition was very stiff. I have been judging for 18 years since I was 16 and I enjoy it, but it is difficult judging your own girls.”
