Amanzimtoti racer revs SA to win

Luke thanks everyone who helped him raise funds to race in Italy.

Amanzimtoti racer Luke Grundy has been hitting the high revs recently. The 12-year-old represented SA for the fourth time at the FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations at Donnybrook Raceway in Zimbabwe from 30 August to 1 September.

In the first heat he finished third and followed that up with two fourth places to claim a fourth overall and add valuable points to help Team SA win the meet against Zimbabwe, Botswana, Kenya, Zambia, Uganda and Morocco.

The Amanzimtoti Primary School grade 6 learner barely had time to unpack his suitcase before hitting the long road to Welkom for a pre-national race at Phakisa where he finished fourth in the 85cc Pro Mini (big wheels) series on 7 September.

He returns to Phakisa this weekend for nationals and his last race to conclude a gruelling 2019 season will be at Terra Topia in Johannesburg on 26 October.

In July the young speedster represented his country at the FIM Junior Motocross World Championships in Trentino, Italy on 13 and 14 July. “It was two days of racing, with practice qualifying on the Saturday and heat races on the Sunday,” said Luke. Five SA riders raced in the 85cc two stroke champs and Luke ended 34th in his qualifying race, and 32nd in the last chance race. “Unfortunately, that meant I missed out on racing on the Sunday.

“The track was amazing, in the countryside in Northern Italy with the Swiss Alps as a backdrop. It was better than any of the tracks in SA. One of the uphills was about seven storeys high, with a jump on it. Once I got used to the track, I started to enjoy myself. The standard of the other riders was very high. Most of them finish school at 11am and they ride every day.”

Luke thanks everyone who helped him raise funds to race in Italy, including Franck Engelbrecht, Vernon du Toit, the Iguana Group and Studio 88, and FCR Suspension for its continued sponsorship.
