Young Koi breeder hopes to reel in more awards

Reegan dedicates most of his free time to taking care of the fish and feeding them.

Researching the behaviour and habits of Koi quickly became a passion for Reegan Jacobs who was captivated by the kaleidoscope of colours that can be seen on the majestic and exotic Koi fish.
Although the 17-year-old was the youngest breeder at the show, he won the chairman’s show award and placed second for his three fish. His impressive collection of 76 fish began with three when he was 13-years-old. With no knowledge of Koi at the time, the young lad hoped to buy a gold fish as a pet, but was instantly drawn to the Koi.

“This was my first show and I didn’t expect to win anything, but I received two awards and it felt wonderful.  The show’s chairman’s award is when judges select the best fish at the show. I went into the competition for the experience and came out with much more than what I expected.”

He dedicates most of his free time to taking care and feeding them.

“This is a great hobby because you only really need time and passion. The water balance is an important factor when breeding Koi. I feed my fish 60g a day at six different times. My family also assists with feeding while I am at school. It is extremely rewarding that my fish won awards, because it is a lot of hard work.”

Reegan thanks his parents and brother Devin for being his biggest sponsors and supporters. He is now planning a trip to Japan to expand his knowledge on Koi fish.
