Toti rugby club takes on mighty Richards Bay team

The fierce rivalry between these two clubs was once again evident and the main match between the first teams turned out to be the humdinger it promised.

Rugby lovers took full advantage of the glorious weather and the only day fixture this season to head to Ethekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti Rugby Club on Saturday, 27 July to support their boys as they took on the mighty Richards Bay. The fierce rivalry between these two clubs was once again evident and the main match between the first teams turned out to be the humdinger it promised.

Toti’s superior backline got the match off at a fierce pace. It was a ding dong battle in the first half, as the lead changed regularly, however, it was the home team who went into the break with a lead.

This momentum was kept up in the second half, as they kept their good winning record against Richards Bay intact by beating the Zululand side 35-25. Kevin Buck (forwards) and Warren Hill (backline) were awarded man of the match awards. On paper it seemed like the Toti Eagles won the game comfortably, but not without having to fight until the final blast of the ref’s whistle.

Bennie Mashabane has the try line firmly in his sights during the first team’s match against Richards Bay.

The second team’s match was a game of pride, and some pay back opportunity for Toti, as they lost in Richard Bay by the closest of margins. The game started well, with Toti opening with the first try from Shane Dormelh under the poles. A few minutes later Richards Bay crossed the line for a try to make the score 7-5 to the home team.

Thereafter Toti found some structure and started to play, scoring a few more tries in the first half. Winger Andile Khwella had two great runs down the touch line for his two. At this stage the Toti boys where crossing the line at will, with forward Warner Jacobs scoring from the base of the scrum. Sheldon Higgo was converting from all corners of the field, and the game became a one sided affair, with Toti boys lining up for tries. Abraham Barnard, Dylan Kelly, Charley Jacobs and Luan van Zyl all crossing the line to give Toti a 62-8 win.

Etienne Ries sidesteps his opposition on the way to the try line for Toti’s first team.
