Swimming champ shines at Prestige Championships

Monica broke through 29 seconds in the 50m freestyle and brought her 100m freestyle time down from a 1.03 to a 1.01.97.

Amanzimtoti swimming champ Monica Botha celebrated an amazing week of swimming at the Prestige Championships that took place from 25 to 29 June at the short course 25m Joliffe pool in Pietermaritzburg. Monica broke through 29 seconds in the 50m freestyle and brought her 100m freestyle time down from a 1.03 to a 1.01.97, an incredible achievement, as it’s not easy to improve times by one second at this level. Her love for butterfly also showed in her races.

She was awarded five SA national junior awards (SANJ), 10 gold, one silver and one bronze.

Results:
Girls 11 years and under:
200m freestyle – 2.19.12 (gold and SANJ)
50m backstroke – 34.48 (gold)
50m breaststroke – 39.85 (heats), PB and silver (finals)
50m freestyle – 28.73 (two PBs in heats with 29.01 and gold)
100m butterfly – 1.12.60 (two PBs in heats with 1.15.37 and gold)
200m IM – 2.36.88 (PB, gold and SANJ)
100m backstroke – 1.12.91 (PB, gold and SANJ)
50m butterlfy – 32.60 (PB and gold, two PBs in heats – 32.20)
100m breaststroke – 1.23.86 (PB and gold)
100m freestyle – 1.01.97 (PB, gold and SANJ)

Girls 14 years and under:
200m backstroke – 2.36.91 (PB, bronze and SANJ)
200m breaststroke (heats) – 3.07.45.

Mixed 12 years and under 50m freestyle relay – 2.21.41.
