Toti rugby players take on Varsity College

Toti first and second teams will compete against College Rovers on Friday, 10 May

Ethekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti Rugby Club’s first team got their 2019 Moor Cup campaign off to a disappointing start, going down 28 – 13 to Varsity College at Jonsson Kings Park stadium on Saturday, 27 April.

Although the score line may suggest it was an easy victory for the Durban North team, who are being spoken of as title contenders this year with their crop of young players, many of whom have been involved in the Sharks U20 set up, it was in fact Toti who held the territory and possession advantage for much of the game, but could not convert this advantage into points with mistakes coming at crucial times.

It must be remembered, however, that this is largely a new look Toti team, with an almost completely revamped backline, which, given a chance to gel as a unit, will create many headaches for opposition teams, with their combination of strength and pace, with the new center pairing of Marnus Coetzee and Kwesi Ansah showing glimpses of what can be expected in games to come.

The Toti forwards too showed that they will be a real force to be reckoned with a good showing against a highly rated VC pack, with captain Kevin Buck delivering a performance that may well have piqued the interest of the Sharks Super Sport Challenge selectors, earning him the man of the match award with a colossal display on the afternoon, with new signing Marnus Coetzee at inside centre being nominated the backline player of the match, although his centre partner, Ansah came close to receiving that award.

Toti’s points came via tries from prop Darren Cooper and the aforementioned Coetzee, with the balance of the points coming via the boot of Divan Meintjies, another of the new signings, playing at fullback.

The second team lost 36 – 0 against Varsity College. The third team match against Collegians was cancelled by Collegians. Toti first and second teams will compete against College Rovers at KP3 on Friday, 10 May with kick off scheduled for 7pm and 8.30pm respectively. The third team will play against Crusaders at Crusaders with kick off scheduled for 8.30pm.

The club held their third round of the 100 Club draw on Friday, 26 April and the winners were Donovan Bussac, CBO Accounting staff and Leisha Duncan.
