Toti racers remain on winning track

Wyatt has been racing for five years after starting on a 50cc.

Amanzimtoti racers continue to impress on the track after two juniors won their KZN motorcross championships at Cato Ridge on Sunday, 11 November. Wyatt McGregor (11) and Luke Grundy (12) won the regional 65cc and 85cc championships respectively.

Luke also came second in the national championships in his first year of racing the 85cc class competitively.

Wyatt was exceptional in the first half of the season, wrapping up the championship three months ago after only 13 of the 16 heats. “This is my second year in the 65cc class. In my first year I finished second in the championship,” said the grade 5 Amanzimtoti Primary School pupil.

Wyatt was selected to the SA team but while racing in the FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations in Zambia at the end of August had a horrific crash where he broke his femur, arm and elbow. Although still battling to walk properly, he climbed on his KTM to race the last race even though he had already clinched the championship.

Wyatt McGregor gives his 65cc some gas during this year’s KZN motorcross championships.

“My family is immigrating to the UK, so I will race in Europe next year,” he said. “I’m excited about racing in Europe and I think I should do alright. The accident hasn’t affected my confidence at all.”

Wyatt has been racing for five years after starting on a 50cc. His dad Luke was a racer, so dirt bikes are in his blood and he is sponsored by Alfie Cox Motul KTM and his dad’s shop Outback Racing.
In the class above, Luke has gone from strength to strength through the various championships. He wrapped up the 85cc junior class championship a month ago in his maiden year, after winning three of the six races.

Next season the grade 7 Toti Primary pupil will contest the 85cc pro mini (big wheel) championship. “I should finish in the top three easily,” said the confident speedster. “I lost the national title this year by only six points, so my goal is to win it next season.”

Luke is coached by ex-SA champ Wyatt Avis three times a week at Pietermaritzburg and Hammarsdale. He is a familiar name in racing circles, having been selected to the SA squad as early as 2015 as an eight-year-old. He has also featured in the Dirt and Trail magazine and was interviewed for the Ignition TV programme. He is sponsored by Iguana Doors and KTM.
