Winkle Lifesaving Kiddies Fishing Competition and the upcoming open day

WINKLESPRUIT Surf Lifesaving Club (WSLC) celebrated the successful turnout at its first Winkle kids and friends fishing competition on Sunday, 29 July at Warner Beach.

The weather played its part and the children had a great time catching and releasing small fish with the help of their parents and marshals.

Many parents also enjoyed the morning assisting their children who were fishing for the first time. It is still unclear who enjoyed the day the most – the parents or the children.

“After the competition WSLC held a prize-giving and bring and braai at the club, where a jumping castle sponsored by Seeff kept the masses of children busy,” explained WSLC’s Mikayla Sumption.

“All the competitors received awesome goodie bags and a T-shirt. The top three achievers in each age group received prizes and because of the amazing sponsors, those who didn’t achieve top spots still received lucky draw prizes.”

“Immense gratitude is owed to the Winkle team for putting this together,” said Mikayla.

The community is reminded of the club’s annual open day which will take place this Sunday, 2 September. The day is set to start at 8.30am and it promises to be an absolute blast. This is an opportunity for budding nippers (seven to 14 years), junior and senior lifesavers (14 years and up) to experience the sport. With food on sale, activities for all age groups and some entertaining music, it will be a morning not to be missed.

“We encourage everyone to join us for this great event. Bring friends and family along for the experience. All are welcome,” said Mikayla. “This open day marks the start of the official training season for nippers, juniors and seniors alike. The retest dates are set and the lifesavers are hard at work.”

Clean Surf Project will do a presentation on Sunday morning, which will be followed by a clean-up of the beach. All those present at the morning are urged to lend an ear to the environmentally conscious group’s talk and lend a hand at the clean-up.

The seniors are particularly excited to be training with Dean Marais, the current national coach. This is a great privilege for these up-and-coming lifesavers.

WSLC hopes to see everyone this Sunday for the open day, and for many Sundays after that celebrating our beautiful coastline.
