WINKLESPRUIT Surf Lifesaving Club members seem to have shaken off the winter cobwebs and are gearing up to see in the summer season as per tradition on the first Sunday of September – this year the day is Sunday, 2 September, which is the club’s official open day.
Open day presents an opportunity for anyone interested in getting involved in the exciting lifestyle sport of surf lifesaving, where surf skills are developed in a fun and friendly environment. Children from the age of six through to 14-years-old for the nipper section and prospective juniors and seniors spend the morning with club officials and members and get involved with the various age group related activities.
Club manager, Paul Fryer has been working flat out to get the club ready for the big day and he seems to have honed his horticultural and landscaping skills by getting the grounds into shape. Paul also has the entertainment facility working like a well-oiled machine. Support his efforts. Equipment officer Alan Land also seems to have been bitten by the horticultural bug and besides the ongoing work to get the club craft in order for the season, he has been planting grass in the bare patches around the club grounds.
August kicked off with the first of the KZN Lifesaving training series having taken place on Sunday, 5 August at Marine. As this series is an individual competition, club members who competed earned themselves some good points in the events entered. Members are to note that to be eligible for selection to the KZN team, they have to compete in at least two of the three series. The next series event is on Sunday, 2 September at Suncoast Pirates. The club will send a team to be announced.
On the lifeguard training front, the club instructors and coaches have been preparing a class for their various lifeguard awards as well as getting returning senior members’ qualifications up to date. Club captain Gareth Hazell is running with the JLA / LA classes and resident Springbok junior coach, Dean Marais has commenced with team fitness and skills training for all. Make sure you attend these training sessions.

A reminder to all members about the special general meeting of members that has been called for this Sunday, 19 August at 2pm at the Club. This is a very important meeting where the committee requires voting by active members on honorary life membership and honorary membership applications and an announcement on developments in the competition scope, as well as the opportunities that exist for club coaches within the national coaching and development programme. All club coaches and anyone interested in coaching is urged to attend as there will be formal registration of coaches completed after the meeting.
