Amanzimtoti cyclists’ cross-country tour takes them to Cape Cycle Tour

The club’s next social event is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 March

THE road cyclists (roadies) of Amanzimtoti Cycling Club thought it a great idea to ride to Cape Town in preparation for the Cape Town Cycle Tour which takes place on Sunday, 11 March.

As such, on Friday, 2 March 11 eager members loaded up their bikes onto the club’s trailers and climbed into two vehicles to set off to their first stop which was at Gariep Dam.

Having sat the whole day, the following day they had a quick one-hour training ride before driving off to Touws River (more sitting but their legs were at least moving), from where they will ride the rest of the way, with support vehicles following.

Sunday saw them ride 80kms, followed by 100kms on Monday which got them to Worcester. Tuesday’s distance was the longest – close on 150kms. They had a few breaks for snacks and refreshments to get them to Hermanus. Wednesday’s plan was to see how the legs were feeling and either ride to Cape Agulhas via Bredasdorp (128kms) or, if the Elim route was tarred, go that route for another 110kms. They also contemplated just riding to Gansbaai and back (80kms) before relaxing.

That will leave Thursday to ride the remaining 84kms to Gordons Bay and drive the rest of the way to Cape Town.

The tour sounds very well organised and amazing. Club members can’t wait to hear all about it at the club’s next social event which is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 March at Amanzimtoti Sports Centre.

A date that needs to be diairised is Amanzimtoti Cycling Club’s annual MTB race known as the Dafco MTB Challenge, which is set to take place on 1 July, a week before the next KZN lap challenge championship series – a perfect race to test your fitness.
