SPECTATORS were treated to a magnificent game of bowls in the Brad Cox singles final at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) on Wednesday, 14 February.

Two of the club’s best bowlers, Doreen Salmond and Ian Crouch met in the final which was played under floodlights to a packed veranda.

During the marathon game, no-one could predict the outcome as the score was close throughout. After 26 ends, Doreen was ahead 20-19; however Ian took two shots to win the game on the 27th end. Congratulations to both of them, and well done to Marietjie van den Bergh who came third, as well as Steve Woor who was fourth. Thanks to generous sponsor Brad Cox and his wife Kathy who presented the prizes in his absence.

In the penultimate round of the Hypersure mixed trips, Heather Brown, Martin Birch and Karen Shepherd have held on to the lead in plate A. New leaders in plate B are John Hewgill, Keith West and Debbie Gueffroy. The final round will be played on Friday, 23 February.

Nita Meumann had a good win over Debbie Gueffroy in the women’s open singles, while Barbara Beamson just pipped Tokkie de Kock at the post by one shot, and Jackie Holdrick beat Marie van der Walt.

Fifteen games of mixed pairs were played on Saturday, with one game scheduled to be played during the week.

Going through to the second round were Heather Brown and Steve Woor, Coy Schrauwen and Karen Shepherd, Carl van Heerden and Adrienne Robbins, Dallas Davis and Leonie Mills, Glen Scorgie and Jackie Holdrick, Dave Kemp and Jacqui Fouché, Adie Fuller and Marietjie van den Bergh, Doreen Salmond and Eric Klopper, Barbara Beamson and Mike Roberts, Ian Crouch and Julie Sutherland, Mike Groom and Lesley Stephens-Viviers, Jeanne Alexander and Barry Bush, Doug and Lynn Joubert, Tokkie and Kokkie de Kock, and Mike and Michelle Pitchers.

In the men’s perfect delivery 2-4-2, the winners were Eric Klopper and Barry Bush; runners-up were Barry Buckland and Vish Studinski; and the second session went to Peter Labuschagne and Ben Venter.

Ian Crouch, Lofty van Tonder, Marion Crouch and Julie Sutherland won the Big Chicks. In second place were Mark van den Bergh, Tokkie and Kokkie de Kock and Mike Roberts. First session winners were Marietjie van den Bergh, Paul Davies, Steve Woor and Jacqui Birch, while second session went to Dennie Denysschen, Maureen Griffin, Dawn Schrauer and Ben Venter. Most bowls went to Heather Brown, Bobby Henderson, Lys McDonald and Les Brown.

At TGIF Bobby Henderson won the 100 board. Greg McLeod was at the club to win the attendance draw, so next week’s prize will revert to R100. Peter Callaghan tried to choose the right key for Eric Klopper, but sadly there was no luck for him. Next week’s key will be worth R2,980.

Good bowling to ABC’s 12 players playing in the men’s Port Natal open and senior singles on Saturday, 24 February. Bowlers are asked to note that some of the open singles will be played at Toti, so go along and support the players. Three rounds will be played from 9am. The club urgently needs markers all day on Saturday, so volunteer if you are available.

After the success of the first burgers and bowls night at the club, ABC will hold the next one on Thursday, 1 March at 5pm. Play will start at 5.30pm. Visitors are welcome, cost is R20 for the game and R30 for a build-a-burger. If you wish to reserve a spot, phone Talla on 031-903-3857 or be at Toti Bowling Club by 5.15pm.

Many happy returns go this week to Gerald Gordon-Hughes, Denise Bingham, Jacqui Birch and Leon van Rensburg. Good health is wished to all members.
