THE Brad Cox singles at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) saw some riveting bowls played under lights on Friday, 7 February.

In the quarter finals Steve Woor beat Kathy Cox; Ian Crouch prevailed over Peter Callaghan; Doreen Salmond defeated Paul Davies and in a marathon game Marietjie van den Bergh came from behind to overcome Gustav Somers.

In the semis Ian had a good win over Steve, and in a close game Doreen got the better of Marietjie. Thus two of ABC’s more seasoned bowlers were due to meet in the final on Wednesday, 14 February.

After week four of the Hypersure mixed trips, plate A and plate B have been finalised.

Still at the top of the ladder are Heather Brown, Martin Birch and Karen Shepherd. Leading plate B are Barry Simpson, Dave Kemp and Jacqui Fouché. With scores reverting back to zero, anything can happen in the last two rounds.

On Saturday, 10 February, 13 new bowlers aged from nine to senior citizens turned up to try their luck in the new bowlers’ challenge. The format was singles to 15 shots, players were also taught to mark. The winner was Keagan O’Brien, runner-up Shaun Anderson, third was Hilary Lindsay and fourth Jayden Peek. Thanks to Marietjie van den Bergh who organised this competition, and together with her husband Mark were the main sponsors. Thanks to the other sponsors and members of ABC who helped with marking. Several of these ‘newbies’ are returning to receive coaching. ABC wishes them good luck in their future bowling careers.

In the women’s 2-4-2 the winners were Marietjie van den Bergh and Talla Stephens-Viviers; runners-up were Doreen Salmond and Jackie Holdrick; and the second session was won by Pam Chalder-Royle and Elmarie Young. Denise Bingham won the 100 board.

The men’s drawn pairs got off to a good start on Saturday, continuing on Sunday morning with preliminary games and some first round games being completed. Going through to the quarter-finals were Ian Crouch and Dave McMillan, Greg McLeod and Mark van den Bergh, Alec Stirzaker and Steve Woor, Carl van Heerden and Terry Morgan, Lofty van Tonder and Colin Spence, Mike Roberts and Steve Evenwell, Adie Fuller and Keith West and Vince Phaal and Trevor Zulch. Carl and Terry, Lofty and Colin, and Vince and Trevor then made it through to the semi-finals. The last quarter-final will be between Ian and Dave, and Greg and Mark.

In the women’s drawn fours, Pam Chalder-Royle, Stella Erasmus, Lys McDonald and Debbie Gueffroy beat Sue Welch, Marie van der Walt, Elbie Fourie and Toni Roberts. In the women’s senior singles, Joan van Rensburg overcame Denise Bingham, and Marion Crouch defeated Linda McGregor; and in the women’s open singles Heather Cooper beat Denise Bingham.

Good news reached the club that Nan Roos from Battlefields, one of ABC’s country members, has won gold in the BSA masters senior singles. Congratulations Nan, ABC is very proud of you.

At TGIF Shane Tocher won the 100 board. Bill Williams was not present so next week’s attendance draw is worth R600. Paul Davies had no luck in opening the key draw box. If you choose the lucky key next week the prize money will be R2,560.

The draws for the Port Natal men and women’s open and senior singles are on the board, as well as the club mixed pairs. Note the women’s drawn fours has been carded for the afternoon of 24 February. Play women’s open and senior singles as soon as possible, otherwise they will be carded. Entry forms for PN trips are also on the board.

Due to Port Natal singles being played at the club, note there will be no muttons in February or March. Keep checking the board.

Birthday wishes are sent this week to Barry Simpson, Les John, Linda McGregor, Ian McDonald and Archie Walker. Get well soon for those who are sick or in hospital.
