The coming Sunday our men hit the league trail again, with the Premier league side hosting MECC at home

THE Amanzimtoti Golf Club (AGC) women’s section hosted the annual South Coast meet on Sunday, and it was a good day, albeit without the trophy being won by one of the club’s teams.

The winning team were from Southbroom, with second and third place also going to the girls from down south.

The club’s grateful thanks to the women section members, club management and staff for helping make this day such a resounding success.

Best wishes to Jacqui Porrill and Gill Symons who have joined the South Coast Region committee for the year ahead.

The coming Sunday AGC’s men hit the league trail again, with the Premier league side hosting MECC at home, the B team playing away against Simbithi, and the Allerton boys having a bye. Good luck to the players, and hopefully the results will be better this time around.

On Wednesday the individual points stableford competition was won by Norbert Dupont on 39 points, beating Steve Naude into second place by way of a count out. Third place went to Colin Scorer on 38.

Friday’s nine hole sundowner had a small field of 18 players, and one of the J Vogel men took the honours with 18 points, beating Neil Oberholzer by the dreaded count out, and third place went to Tommy McNaughton on 16.

On Saturday the whole club played their monthly medal rounds, and for the women it was Gerda Heydenrych taking the win on 73 nett in the silver division, followed by Brenda Morgan on 74.

Sue Conlan picked up the win in the bronze division on 78 nett, followed by Adri Slabbert on 79 nett. Atri Wilson had the least number of putts over the 18 holes, only needing to use the flat stick 29 times, and Brenda Morgan had a two club on the seventh.

Men’s A division medal winner was Bester Swart on 67 nett, winning this division for the second month in a row, and followed by Kalvin van Rensburg on 68 and Ronnie Nair on 69 nett. Fourth place went to Michael Dunlop on 70 nett, and it is good to see him return to form after his time Down Under.

Eugene Mbambo ran away from the B division field, winning on a very fine 64 nett, followed by Janos Molnar on 67, Wimpy Nel on 70, and Kendal Cormack also on 70. The C division was won by Mike Murphy on 71 nett, followed by count out winner Hannes Odendaal on 74, the evergreen Jimmy Corr also on 74, and Terry Cousins in fourth spot on 75 nett.

Best gross for each division was Kalvin van Rensburg, 70 gross, Eugene Mbambo 76 gross and Mike Murphy 92 gross.

AGC’s course is playing beautifully, and the club invites locals and visitors to go down and see for themselves. Phone the pro shop on 031-902-4144 to book a tee off time and hire a cart if so desired, and the driving range is open every day for those wishing to hone their skills or try out what can only be called the best game on earth.
