It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of former Toti bowler Christine Darley after a short illness.

CONGRATULATIONS to Amanziomtoti Bowling Club’s (ABC) women who excelled in the KZN Quadrangular tournament played at Stella Park last weekend.

Port Natal, which included ABC’s Doreen Salmond, Marion Crouch and Barbara Beamson, won the Ivan Southwood trophy.

Also the KZN invitational team, including Toti’s Jane Coetzee and Lynn Joubert, won the KZN Bowls President’s team trophy. The men’s tournament was hosted by ABC and the Port Natal men won the McAlister trophy. The players thanked Toti for the superb facilities, the bar and kitchen and the organisation by Doug Joubert (PN vice president), Alan McGregor and Mike Groom. Thanks to ABC’s members who turned up to support the excellent bowling.

There were some very close games in the first knockout stage of the Brad Cox tournament. The final eight playing on Wednesday, 7 February are Gustav Somers, Marietjie van den Bergh, Paul Davies, Doreen Salmond, Peter Callaghan, Ian Crouch, Kathy Cox and Steve Woor. Weather permitting the final will be on 14 February so afterwards there will be a Valentine’s bring and braai with music.

In a close first round game of the women’s open singles, where the score was peels three times, Amanda Ninow was the winner by four shots over Nicky Stirzaker.

Visitors Dion Audie, Wayne and Trevor were the winners in the men’s monthly trips; runners-up were Pete Shepard, Ian Shearer and Tony Cam; and the second session went to Coy Schrauwen, Dallas Davis and Barry Buckland.

Unfortunately week four of the Hypersure trips was rained off so the planned games will now be played on Friday, 9 February. At TGIF the 100 board was won by John Hewgill (Mr Thing). Social member Steve Conlon’s number came out in the attendance draw but he was not there to collect the prize so next week the draw will be worth R550. Mike Groom was unfortunate that his key was not the lucky one this week. Next week’s key will be worth R2,010.

In the first of the burgers and bowls evenings, 22 bowlers took to the greens. It was a fun evening with delicious burgers. Music was provided by Ian McDonald, thanks to all for their help. The next burgers and bowls will be held on Thursday, 1 March.

It was with great sadness that the club heard of the death of former Toti bowler Christine Darley after a short illness. Deepest condolences go to her husband Tony, as well as friends and family. Also very sad news was heard that past president Frank Quinn, who has been frail for a while, has died. Heartfelt condolences go to Sadie, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Birthday wishes are sent to Vince Phaal, Colin Spence, Heather Brown and Fred Rautenbach.
