WITH February being the traditional month of love, Umkomaas Golf Club’s women are hosting a Valentine’s Day fourball waltzing alliance this Saturday, 10 February.

This is going to be a mixed sponsored competition, where all donated prizes will be very welcome and promises to be great fun with loads of laughter and hopefully some reasonably good golf.

All you have to do to book a tee time is phone Sonny at the club on 039-973-1042.There will also be nearest the pin prizes on all the short holes. The waltzing format will be explained if need be.

On Wednesday, 31 January, UGC welcomed back Sierd Lamminga who has been out of action for almost a year. It is so good to see that, although his golf might be a bit ‘rubbish’ at the moment, he is back playing with the Strand Strikers on Wednesdays again. Welcome back, Sierd – it’s so good to see you. The individual stableford competition was well supported last week with one of the Strand Strikers, Peter Bond taking first prize with 39 points, just pushing Eric Morsner into second spot with 38 points. Taking the third prize on a count out, was Derek Airey from Peter Toward in fourth slot, followed by Dave Mulroy, Nelson Moonsamy and Richard Andersson, all five players on 37 points.

On Saturday, 3 February, the club held the monthly medal and mug competition where club captain Peter Toward welcomed visitors Mike and Karen Lithgow.

In the A division, Patrick Ndlovu claimed first place with a score of 66 nett from runner-up Joe Mkhungo, right behind him, with 67 nett. In the B division UGC’s wunderkind, 16-year-old Tash Naicker brought it home with a nett score of 64.

He was followed by Derek Airey, four shots behind Tash, with a 68 nett.

The C division did it a bit differently this month by having a stableford competition as well as medal. Peter Toward scooped the winner’s prize on a count out from Simon van den Bosch, both players had a 69 nett with 37 points. The few women who played had a torrid time with their medal round. Sabiha Bacaus was the ultimate winner with her 72 nett. Denise Nell shot 85 nett with Linda Toward finishing on 89 nett. Sabiha also won the least putts prize with her 29 putts. Patrick Ndlovu surprised everyone by winning the jackpot with 15 points. That must surely be a record? The hidden birdie (18th hole) will be carried over. There were only two two-clubs, both on the fourth hole by Chris Carelsen and Jimmy Spear. Unusually, there were two nearest the pin prizes as well, which went to Wally Kent on the ninth and Nelson Moonsamy on the 17th. Well done to all the prize winners.

Golfer of the month for February is 16-year-old Tash Naicker with his 64 nett. Congratulations Tash.

Four of the women – Sabiha Bacaus, Natalie Singer, Lesley Fraser and Linda Toward played in the South Coast meet fourball alliance competition at Amanzimtoti Golf Club last Sunday, 4 February and although they didn’t win a prize, they came in fourth overall. They all had a great day in this first SCR competition of the year. The Sunday ‘bash’ was also played last Sunday and although the field was a small one, the guys played very well. The winners were Joe Mkhungo in first place with 43 points and second was Lindani Mthiyane with 41 points. The next “Bash” will be on Sunday, 18 February.

All visitors are welcome to play in the club’s Valentine’s waltzing alliance on Saturday, 10 February. Call the club on 039-973-1042 to book. On Sunday, 11 February, the club hosts the Allerton league which is a 36 hole competition so only a few time slots will be open for social golf. Call the club if you wish to play on Sunday.

The early bird special is still going strong on Tuesdays and Fridays only, before 7.30am at R75 per player. Call Graham Steyn on 083-325-5705 and if you need a partner, Graham will be more than happy to play a round of golf with you.

Six pin is played on Friday afternoons only from 2.30pm. This is a great way to destress after a hectic week at work. That ‘little white ball’ really doesn’t mind being smacked around the golf course for six holes and there could be food after your game as well. The score cards are in the bar and this game is open to all.
