Birders’ course to see eyes cast to Durban’s skies

The course will he held at Paradise Valley Nature Reserve Conference Centre

BIRDLIFE Port Natal will host a beginners birding course, aimed at introducing birding to new birders and to people interested in taking up birding as a pastime.

The course will he held at Paradise Valley Nature Reserve Conference Centre in Pinetown on Saturday, 10 February.

Registration starts at 8.30am, while the workshop begins at 9am and ends at 1pm.

Entrance fee is R80 per BirdLife member; R95 for non-members and juniors U18 pay R60.

Subjects to be covered include: How best can I go about identifying birds? What are the main types of birds? What do I need for birding? Where can I go birding? With whom can I go birding? How can I attract birds to my garden?

David Allan is the honorary president of BirdLife Port Natal and the curator of birds at the Durban Natural Science Museum and Steve Davis is a well-known local birder and co-author of the book “Field Guide to Shorebirds of South Africa”. Both presenters are sought-after experts on birds.

Directions:

From M13 westbound, take the Stapleton Road/New Germany turn-off (exit 16). Keep left into Eden Road. Follow Eden Road past the blood bank and turn right into Oxford Road. The reserve is at the end of the road.

Take along a notebook and pen or pencil, as well as binoculars for afterwards. Course notes will be provided. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be available on arrival and mid-morning. If you would like to stay for lunch afterwards, take your own picnic baskets.
