Rains put a spring back in UGC’s step

A reminder that the 'Wake' for Ben van der Sandt will take place at Umkomaas Golf Club on Friday, 27 October at 11am.

SPRING treatment is done for 2017 at Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) and members and visitors can look forward to the course looking absolutely stunning come summer.

Fortunately there weren’t any huge deluges, as was the case earlier in October – not too much damage was recorded after ‘that’ downpour on Tuesday, 10 October.

The tee boxes, greens and fairways have been manicured to within an inch of their lives, even the the rough is looking good.

Since it was Spring treatment last week, there was no competition on Wednesday, so UGC looks forward to welcoming back the Wednesday ‘school’.

Last Saturday’s competition was a fourball betterball, played in pleasant conditions, slightly cool, overcast with not much wind about.

UGC welcomed Tallies Taljaard and his son, Dylan as well as frequent upcountry visitors, Selwyn and Annabelle Hesom. The scores certainly reflected how perfect the weather was with first-placed winners Lesa Vergottini and Dave Mulroy on 48 points, followed by Eric Morsner and Devlyn Fraser in second spot on 46 points and in third place, once again, Dave Mulroy pivotting with Keith Vergottini with 44 points. Well played, Dave.

The jackpot, hidden birdie (17th hole) and the two-club competitions will be carried over to next weekend but the prize in the non-skills department – the attendance draw – was won by none other than chairman, Devlyn Fraser. Well done to all the players.

This Saturday, 28 October, the competition will be a fourball alliance, straight forward with no frills attached, followed by social golf on Sunday, 29 October.

The alliance league match for October will be played at a later date, due to inter-club being played this weekend.

While on the subject of inter-club, to the women playing their inter-club up in Dundee and the men playing just south of Umkomaas – good luck to them all, play well and enjoy the weekend. The women will certainly have a wonderful time as it’s not all about the golf, it’s fun-time too. To all the women, not just from Umkomaas but from the other golf clubs tool, travel safely to your destination and have a great weekend of golf.

A reminder that the wake for Ben van der Sandt will take place at UGC on Friday, 27 October at 11am. All friends are invited to attend to celebrate Ben’s life with Edith and his family.

As always, all UGC’s information can be found at www.umkomaasgolf.co.za – logon for a tour of the golf course.
