THE men’s and women’s league teams represented Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) by playing in their league games, the men up in Maritzburg and the women down in Margate.
The men played their relegation match against Maidstone Golf Club and the club is proud that UGC will again play in the A division of the Allerton league in 2018.
Congratulations to all the boys, whose matches were hard fought. The final result was an outstanding 6.5 to 5.5. The women played their league matches but unfortunately only Natalie Singer and Sabiha Bacaus won their games. Commiserations to their team members and well done to Sabiha and Natalie.
Last Wednesday’s competition welcomed David Govender but local knowledge won on the day. Jimmy Pickavance took home the coveted first prize with his 39 points, only just taking it from second placed Fred Brandow who ended with 38 points. In third spot was Piet ‘Jorsie’ Vermaak with 35 points.
Last Saturday’s Toyota sponsored monthly medal and mug competition welcomed visitor, Quentin Richardson. In the A division Devlyn Fraser took the honours with his 77 nett, while B division was won by new member, Patrick Ndlovu on a good 66 nett. The C division had a new winner – well done to Ken Koster with his 74 nett. The women also played their medal and least putts competition for September and there were no surprises as Sabiha Bacaus took the first prize with her 73 nett, also taking the least putts prize with 34 putts for her round. The only side competition with a winner was the two-club compo in which Patrick Ndlovu had his two-club on the 13th hole. The jackpot, hidden birdie (sixth hole) and the attendance draw will all be carried over to next weekend.
Golfer of the month for September is Patrick Ndlovu with his excellent 66 nett.
Saturday, 16 September is the Alliance league game. A few teams have dropped out for various reasons so this month’s outcome could drastically change the positions of existing teams. On Sunday, 17 September there will be social golf for all with the Sunday ‘bash’ taking place at about 10am for 10.30am tee off. The guys all meet under the lapa on the first tee if you are interested in playing.
The Aliwal Stroll Tournament planned for Saturday and Sunday, 23 and 24 September promises to be a great weekend of golf. The marketing committee have procured prizes valued at R20,000, having worked hard to make it a great success. If any handicapped player wishes to play, call the office on 039-973-1042 and book a tee time for both days.
The date for Spring treatment has changed to a week later, so note there will be no golf at all that Wednesday. There will be someone in the office to take calls and make bookings for golf and reciprocity will be given to members at various local clubs. Call the club for more information.
