AMANZIMTOTI Bowling Club had five men’s and three women’s pairs teams win their groups and go through to the knockout stages of the Port Natal pairs.

They are Greg McLeod and Doug Joubert; Andy McDonald and Graham Ellis; Pete Shepard and Gustav Somers; Glen Scorgie and Mike Pitchers; Lofty van Tonder and Barry Bush; Julie Sutherland and Amanda Ninow; Robyn Hutton and Heather Cooper; and Barbara Beamson and Jeanne Alexander. Congratulations to all of them, and good bowling in the next round on Saturday, 9 September at 1.30pm. The men will play at Durban Wanderers and the women at Stella Park. They would appreciate support from club members. Players winning this round will play the next round on Sunday morning. To those who did not make it further than the first round, well done on representing the club and doing your best.

Amanzimtoti Bowling Club’s 78th AGM was well supported with 68% of members in attendance. In his report president Alec Stirzaker thanked his committee and all those who contributed to the club in any way in the past year, all voluntarily and without reward. He also thanked the club’s numerous sponsors, without whom it would have a difficult time in light of the present economy.

He then spoke about league and how important it is to the club. Members’ entries and performance in the league adds to the club’s standing in the Port Natal district. All those able to play league should do so for the honour of the club, even if they can only play some of the games. Reserves are also very important. He emphasised that playing league is not for individual glory; it is not important which division or what position you play. Play where the selectors decide you should play for the club.

Competition secretaries Vera Broskie and Brian Crause gave their reports, noting all achievements by various teams and players throughout the year. Brian congratulated the women who have had a good year, and urged the men to try and emulate them. Judging by Sunday’s results in the PN pairs, they have taken this on board. After the AGM the annual prize-giving took place. Well done to all prize winners and runners-up. A list of all prize winners, as well as all reports are available at the club for those who missed the AGM.

At TGIF Pete Shepard won the 100 board. Heather Cooper sadly missed out on the attendance draw so next week’s draw is worth R350. Dave Kemp unfortunately did not choose the correct key for the draw, so next week’s lucky key will be worth R3,350.

Good bowling is wished to new member Marietjie van den Bergh, who represents Namibia from 9 to 15 September in the 2017 African States Bowls Tournament in Edenvale.

Keep checking the board for upcoming games and events. Birthday greetings go this week to Bobby Henderson, Nita Meumann, Elmarie Young, Andy Jones, Lynn Joubert, Noreen Butler, Steve Liebetrau and Bob Southey. Good health is wished to all members.
