Amanzimtoti netball star shines at world cup

Caroline Richter's (16) first-hand experience representing her country against international teams opened the netball champ's eyes to the levels she could reach through her chosen sport.

CAROLINE Richter (16) represented South Africa in the U16 action netball invitational side at the Junior Action Netball World Cup in Johannesburg in July.

Competing against Australia, New Zealand and the South African team represented the culmination of a lifelong dream for the Amanzimtoti High School pupil who started playing netball at the age of seven.

In her goal shooter position, Caroline got involved in every game she played at the World Cup tournament.

“I enjoy playing with my team and just love the game of netball and action netball,” said Caroline.

After the English team withdrew from the competition, South Africa entered an additional invitational team, which Caroline represented. The invitational team placed fourth at the tournament.

In her goal shooter position, Caroline got involved in every game she played at the World Cup tournament. Her first-hand experience representing her country against the foreign teams opened the netball fundi’s eyes to the levels she could reach through her chosen sport.

“I hope to represent South Africa in the Action Netball World Cup in 2022 as a senior player,” said Caroline.

Since returning from the Netball World Cup, Caroline has already returned to the netball court. She is currently busy with U17 KZN action netball trials for 2018 and she represents the Amanzimtoti High School first team.

Balancing out her time keeps her on her toes, as the netball star plays in the action netball league, the Durban North Action Arena and the Glenwood Netball winter league on different nights of the week. Caroline looks forward to her Glenwood Netball Club’s tour to Disneyland, Paris this October.

She has been an avid swimmer, primary school hockey player and ice hockey ace for three years but she has had to choose and prioritise netball over these sports.

Her interests include horse riding, hunting and spending time with friends and family.

“I thank my parents, Keith and Coretha Richter for pushing me and standing by me all my life,” said Caroline. “I owe my sister, Elizabeth gratitude for always believing in me and pushing me to my limits and of course, all my coaches, friends and family for always supporting me.”

After representing her country in the U16 Action Netball Invitational team this year, Caroline Richter knows exactly where she hopes to take her netball one day. Photo supplied.
