AT Amanzimtoti Golf Club, great news from the women’s section is that Jacqui Porrill carried the club’s name high by being the only Toti woman left representing Southern Coastal Region at the Inter Region Championships, due to the other SCR team being knocked out earlier in the competition.
The finals of these championships took place on Sunday at Royal Durban, and Jacqui’s team made short work of the Midlands women to take the win 11 and five, once again bringing the trophy home to the region.
This Sunday, the women’s team travels to Umkomaas to take on the Port Shepstone Frogs in the next round of the 2017 league. Having jumped from bottom of the log to third position after the last encounter, AGC’s women will be hoping for a good showing against the green machine from Sheppie. Good luck to the three pairings of Jacqui Porrill and Gill Symons, Brenda Morgan and Lass Davis, and Estelle Binnekade and Colleen Smit.
Monthly mug and KZNLGA medal and putts were the order of the day on Saturday, with 61 men turning out to compete, and a small field of 10 for the women. The men’s A division was won by Murray Dalton on 71 nett, followed by Bruce Whiting on a count out on 72 nett. B division winner was Nic Brits on 72, beating Rob Kruger by virtue of the dreaded count out, and the C division was won in fine style by Piet Carstens on 69 nett, with Terry Boyce three shots adrift.
Best gross in the three divisions were Bruce Whiting, Hayden Haggie and Piet Carstens, while the best nett scores across the field went to Piet Carstens, Murray Dalton and Nic Brits. The two nearest the pins went to Rob Kruger on the fourth and Bester Swart on the 15th, and Bester Swart also picked up the jackpot prize, a tidy little sum of R470.
The women’s silver division winner was Gerda Heydenrych on 75 nett, while Gill Symons won the bronze division on 76 nett. Least number of putts was won by Gerda on 29, Delene Berry was nearest the pin on the seventh, and Lass Davis made a stunning two club on the 17th. There is nothing easy about putting down the slope on that particular hole, so well done Lass.
In midweek event results, on Wednesday 38 players turned out to compete in the IPS competition, where Mike Halse scooped the win on a well-played 39 points. He was chased by three others on 38, namely Sean Roberts, Mike Flack and Peter Wallace.
Friday’s nine hole sundowner attracted 26 contestants and was won by Madonna, Eminem and Pink’s other brother Nuran on 22. One has to love people who only need to use one name. In second place was Nigel Johnstone on 21, and Neil Oberholzer took third place on 20 points.
Players would have noticed huge diggings on the 13th hole, a consequence of the fallout a few weeks back which laid waste to a huge section of fairway. Exercise patience for a while, as the rehabilitation will be finished as soon as possible. Until then golfers are urged to treat the area as they would a grass bunker, bearing in mind that the tractor has left ruts and mounds all over the place. If you land in these, then you may take relief from the tractor tracks as per the local club rules.
