Southern Coastal region champs duo to represent Toti GC

Friday’s nine hole sundowner was contested by a small field of 18 players

IT has been a relatively quiet week on the Amanzimtoti Golf Club golfing calendar, with the men getting down to the business of playing their matchplay games, and the women involved with far too many events that entail driving huge distances to compete.

It is therefore no surprise that there aren’t too many takers for the Southern Coastal Region Championships taking place at San Lameer this Sunday, with only captain Colleen Smit and Adri Slabbert venturing down the coast to take part. Good luck to these two, hopefully the course will be tamed this time.

On Saturday the women played a 4BBB, and the scores reflected the great quality of golf supplied by most. Winners were Charmain Stone and Wladzia Olivier on a stunning 47 points, with the runners up Liz Donald and Estelle Binnekade on 46. Liz Donald had a two club on the fourth hole, and Gill Symons was nearest the pin on the seventh.

The men played a fourball alliance, and the winning team comprising Nic Brits, Peter Avellini, Chris van Oudtshoorn and Brian Stewart won by a count out from Alan Brydon, Barry Buckland, Colin Scorer and Preston Khomo, both teams scoring 97. In third place was Nico Vogel, Anton Hauptfleisch, Gert Vosser and Phelp Stevenson on 94. The two nearest the pins were won by P Bekker and Steve Conlan on the seventh and 17th respectively.

On Wednesday the conditions once again proved perfect, with three players all finishing on 43 individual points. Willie Boucher won the count out from B Palmer and L de Bruyn. Apologies for no first names, but these are proving harder than hen’s teeth to extract from the scanty records – perhaps all golfers should make a habit of putting their first names and surnames on their scorecards.

Friday’s nine hole sundowner was contested by a small field of 18 players, and Steve Naude took the top spot with 21, followed one shot back by Anton Hauptfleisch.
