THIS week Umkomaas Golf Club focuses on its members, 16-year-old Tash Naicker who played in the 2017 BNC Projects Classic championships at Durban Country Club last week and won the championship.

Tash’s talent knows no bounds and he has continued to surprise everyone, again and again.

This augurs well for Tash’s future as a golfer and with the encouragement from his family, especially his dad Vivian and granddad Tom, he will do well in the sport. Congratulations to Tash from all at UGC. He is an inspiration to all young golfers everywhere.

Wednesday’s individual stableford competition saw Chris Viljoen in the driver’s seat, winning the competition with his 42 points. He was just one shot ahead of Trevor Osborne who took second place with 41 points. Barrie Taylor secured third spot, counting out Roddy McGibbon into fourth place, both on 40 points.

Last Saturday, 1 July was the Toyota sponsored monthly medal plus the medal betterball competition. Confusion was in the air but all will be sorted out in time and things should run smoothly in future competitions. Despite the ups and downs after the competition, this didn’t stop Jimmy Spear from ‘Doing a Devlyn’ on the first hole, scoring an eagle (in the hole in two shots, for the non-golfers, on a par four) and Lindani Mthiyane doing the same thing on the par four, fifth hole. Two eagles in one competition is unheard of at UGC.

The A division winner was Lindani Mthiyane on a 64 with Derek Airey taking the B division on a score of 65. In the C division it was the turn of Ken Koster, with his 73 which took first place. In the medal betterball competition, Lindani and partner Petrus Langa scooped the winner’s prize on 55 with Michelle van der Merwe and Derek Airey in second spot, counting out Bruce Sutcliffe and Kuben Naidoo into third place, both teams on 62. There were a slew of two clubs – Jimmy Spear on the first; Lindani on the fourth, fifth and ninth; John Thompson on the ninth; Nelson Moonsamy on the 13th and Petrus Langa on the 17th. Well done to all. The side competitions, jackpot and hidden birdie (11th hole) will be carried over to this weekend. Willem Muller took home the attendance draw.

The competition this Saturday, 8 July is the fourball betterball with social golf on Sunday, 9 July. The Sunday ‘bash’ takes place too, with the players starting a little earlier than usual at 9.30am for 10am tee-off. They all meet under the lapa on the first tee, anyone is welcome to join, no matter your handicap. All the prizes are cash.

The club reports with deep sadness of the death of Johan Hugo, a longstanding UGC member. He died after a six month battle with cancer. Sincere condolences to Johan’s wife, Elise and the whole family – they are in members’ thoughts at this sad time. Johan’s funeral was on Monday, 3 July.

KidzGolf is on holiday at the moment until the new term starts. The Gerries still play early on Tuesday and Friday mornings and six-pin still takes place on Friday afternoons. An early reminder that the club is hosting the Aliwal Stroll over the long weekend of 23 and 24 September.
