Crusaders crunch out wins against Toti

Toti ended their league season in the fourth division as runners up to Crusaders

ETHEKWINI Refractories Amanzimtoti Rugby Club’s first team faced a huge battle on Friday night against the more favoured SA Homeloans Durban Collegians.

The Durban side were quick out of the blocks, running in two tries on the outside.

It looked like it was going to be one of those games for the Toti outfit. However, the strong Toti forward pack soon started to dominate upfront, winning some good ball for the backline. The game saw good defense by the Toti boys which was mostly matched by Collegians. After Collegians’ two quick tries, it was then try for try with the Toti boys going close at times. There could have seen an upset in the league. Nevertheless, the final score saw Collegians victors by 35–25. A crucial log point was taken out of the game, which kept Toti cemented in third spot on the log. Try scorers on the night were Mike Uppink (twice), Kyle Gerrard and Conrad Mostert. Wimpie Pretorius was successful with a penalty and a conversion.

Man of the match awards went to Kyle Gerrard in the backs and Kevin Buck in the forwards.

Second team

Toti seconds also took on Collegians and even though the score did not show it, it was Toti who did most of the playing with the score at half time being 10-7 in favour of Collegians.

Toti’s try was scored by flyhalf, Dan Janse Van Rensburg which was converted by Jason Hines. With 10 minutes to go in the game, the score was still at 10-7. Unfortunately some small mistakes crept into Toti’s game which left the final score 20–7 in favour of the visitors. All of the players showed big hearts and will definitely end the season on a high.

Forwards man of the match went to Waldo Preston in the forwards and Dan Janse van Rensburg in the backline. The ‘A bomb’ award whet to Abraham Barnard.

Third team

Toti ended its league season in the fourth division as runners-up to Crusaders, who they hosted on Saturday.

Crusaders took an early lead that resulted in Toti constantly having to chase the game.

The game was close until about 15 minutes from the end when a few Toti substitutions were made that disrupted the team who leaked three soft tries in that period. The end result was a 38–12 loss. As such, Toti as the reigning league champions finally relinquished the title to the Crusaders team who are this year’s champions.

The fourths and U20 team games were postponed to a later date.

The club thanks the sponsors who make this game possible and the loyal supporters who made the trip to Hutchison Park despite the cold conditions. Watch out for some exciting news to be revealed in a few weeks by the club.

Thursday, 29 June sees the first and second teams up against Crusaders at Hutchison Park with kick-off scheduled for 7pm and 8.30pm respectively.
