UGC’s Fraser earns his two-club in fine style

The Wednesday competition was, once again, depleted due to many of our mid-week school playing in the Nomads Day on the next day.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) welcomed the Natal Nomads last Thursday, 22 June, with the most glorious weather imaginable.

After the dodgy weather the week before for the Sardine Run, it was always in doubt as to whether or not the perfect winter days in KZN would play along.

None of the players could complain, except about their golfing prowess – both good and bad – it was a wonderful day to be out on the golf course.

Wednesday’s individual stableford competition was again depleted due to many of the mid-week school playing in the Nomads day on the next day. Not to be disappointed, the smallish group played their own competition with as much feistiness and competitiveness as always. Barrie Taylor took first prize, on a count out from Alwyn Stander, putting him into second spot, both with 36 points. Peter Williamson took home the third prize with 34 points.

Saturday’s fourball betterball welcomed visitors Trix van Rensburg from the Bluff and Piet van Graan from State Mines GC. Barrie Taylor was once again in the prizes with his partner, John Thompson who apparently had his best game of the year, taking home the first prize with their 49 points. Second was Keith Vergottini and Peter Toward on 44 points, only just taking it from their spouses, Lesa and Linda in third place, ending their game with 43 points. They in turn counted out Sean Prendergast, Micky Eriksen, Michelle van der Merwe and Simon van den Bosch, all with 43 points. With John Thompson playing so well, it was no surprise when he won the jackpot with 14 points – surely this is a record of some sort? John also had a two-club on the fourth hole but it was Devlyn Fraser who had an absolute ‘blinder’ in the par four first hole, getting his two-club in fine style. Who needs the par three holes for a two-club? Well done, Dev. The hidden birdie (10th hole) went a-begging again this week and will be carried over – the ‘kitty’ for a hidden birdie is just under R300. Peter Toward took home the attendance draw.

UGC’s Sunday Bash took place last week. It is gathering momentum every Sunday it is played. Last Sunday was no exception with 16 players vying for the cash prizes. There were many players with low handicaps – they even had one guy who has occasionally played on the Sunshine Tour with them. But the winner was Lindani on 41 points, Hensford in second spot with 40 points, third spot was taken by Phillip on 40 points and in fourth place was Sipho with 38 points. All the guys enjoyed a braai afterwards, courtesy of James Dlamini which was thoroughly enjoyed. The next game is on Sunday, 9 July, meeting on the first tee at 9.30am to start at 10am. All golfers are welcome to join in to pit their skills against some of the best golfers around.

This Saturday, 1 July is usually the monthly medal and mug but this time the competition will be a combined medal stableford – two competitions for the price of one. This could seriously boggle the brain, but if you think about it, it’s really quite easy to play both competitions at the same time. The women play their medal games this way, adding to the mix, the least putts competition. So for all the guys, it will be another dimension to their medal and mug competition. It’s called ‘multi-tasking’, guys.

On Sunday, 2 July there will be the usual social golf day but added to that will be the craft market out in the carpark. For a stall at the craft market, call Irene on 082-950-6620 or Peter on 082-871-0633. They will provide all the details on dates, times and so on.
