Toti riders claim XCO honours

The club’s inaugural race is taking place on 23 July and all levels of skill and fitness are invited to take part in the 8km lap event.

BRENNAN Anderson and Wesley Parker-Dennison are quietly climbing the local cross country olympic (XCO) ranks and making Amanzimtoti Cycling Club proud in the process.

Last Saturday saw KZN MTB provincial XCO champs take place at Aloe Wildlife Estate in Camperdown.

Brennan claimed a respectable second place in a time of 1.45.55 and Wesley came sixth in a time of 1.54.00.

On Sunday, Brennan climbed back onto his trusted mountain bike and again finished second in the Compendium Burg Wheelers MTB race which was held at St Ives Farm, Howick.

Closer to home, Amanzimtoti Cycling Club Mambas braved the cold winter’s morning and along with some visitors, rode the hills of Illovo. Starting at 7am at the Business Park in Illovo, a bunch of about 18 mountain bike riders broke into two groups. The faster group headed out to ride the two rivers and back, ending up with about 43km in their legs while the second group, under the watchful eye of Tony Rahme, did a much slower pace but all returned back safely for coffee at Braai and Lawaai. A big thanks to Braai and Lawaai for the cookies and free dried fruit.

Amanzimtoti Cycling Club chairman Barry Walker has put in a great deal of time, effort, dedication and energy into making a mountain bike track at Hutchison Park. Hillcrest community has Giba Gorge, the northern community has Hola Trails and now the southern community has Hutchison Park. The club’s inaugural race takes place on 23 July and all levels of skill and fitness are invited to take part in the 8km lap event. Online entries can be found on www.roag.co.za.
