UGC sinks successful Sardine Run for another year

Congratulations to all the winners of the Sardine Run

By P Utter

THE Sardine Run is now a thing of the past, having the final ‘hurrah’ on Saturday, 17 June and as always it was a great success with wonderful weather for the most part.

It is debatable as to whether or not Thursday’s conditions were wonderful with a howling gale blowing through most of the day.

The only players who benefitted were the teams who went out first earlier in the morning. The other two days were superb, so there were no excuses for bad golf, but there was a whole lot of fun going on. Everyone had a fantastic tournament but it wouldn’t have been the success it was without the help of Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) members, friends and most importantly, sponsors Toyota Malanda who were there every day with their new vehicles and banners, East Coast Breweries who kept all the players hydrated on the sixth hole on all three days and the many other sponsors who supported the efforts to make the Sardine Run a special and fun experience for all. A huge thank you to starters – Chris Viljoen, Keith Smith and Wally Kent on the last day, Jimmy Spear for marshalling so diligently every day, John Ridl from Selborne for the loan of golf carts and to all the staff who got the score cards done, sold raffle tickets, readied the golf carts in the dark each morning while still doing the other many duties they have. UGC has the best staff, members and friends any club could wish for.

Congratulations to all the winners of the Sardine Run – and to the many players who travelled long distances to get to the South Coast – see you all next year.

The official results of the Sardine Run will be in Scottburgh Golf Club’s report and possibly on the website at www.sardinegolf.co.za

This Thursday, 22 June, UGC welcomes and hosts the Natal Nomads for their bi-annual tournament and wishes them all a great day of golfing in perfect weather.

On Wednesday, 14 June, the individual stableford saw only a few members play as preparations were in full swing for the Sardine Run. This Saturday, 24 June, the competition is the fourball betterball stableford with social golf on Sunday, 25 June. Also happening on Sunday is the craft market with loads of goodies for all. Go down, have a look what is on offer at the stalls – there might be something of interest.

All side competitions will be back to normal this week – the Geriatrics on Tuesdays and Fridays, starting at 7am, meeting on the first tee box at reduced green fees for any golfers wishing to play with a group early. Call Graham on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740.

Six-pin on Friday will also be back in its usual slot at 2.45pm for those players who want to destress over six holes.

And last but not least, UGC’s KidzGolf is on Saturday mornings, starting at 8am for an hour. Coach Devlyn and his assistant, Mike will be at the club to welcome everyone on the practice putting green. Moms and dads are also welcome to watch what their off-spring are doing for an hour.
