AWI members learn new skills thanks to demos

Yvonne then told us that Nan Podmore will be 90 years young on 23 June.

PRESIDENT of Amanzimtoti Women’s Institute (AWI), Yvonne Dixie welcomed all members to the June meeting, with a special welcome to Melanie Venske, past president of AWI who relocated to Johannesburg.

Thank you to Melanie for coming to spend time with us, it was great to see you again.

Yvonne mentioned that Myrna Olyott was having a knee operation, and she was wished a speedy recovery. Ivers Oldfield, Pat Roach and Nan Podmore were not well and could not attend the meeting. Yvonne then told members that Nan Podmore will be 90-years-young on 23 June. AWI will have tea with Nan to celebrate her birthday on Tuesday, 4 July. Venue to be advised.

Thank you members for all the warm items donated for Bobbi Bear this month. Next month the WI would appreciate donations of cold drinks. Yvonne suggested cardboard containers rather than plastic, which adds to the litter problem, but Bobbi Bear would be grateful for whatever members have to give.

Federation of Women’s Institutes has arranged for a table at the Bainsfield Show (between Richmond and Pietermaritzburg) on 30 July, to showcase what members make. If you would like to add to the table, contact Yvonne – items can be for display or to be sold.

AWI member, Corrine Winson has a worm farm, and if anyone would like some worms, contact her on 084-781-2019.

Patricia McCann led members into two songs ‘Over the Rainbow’ and ‘What a Wonderful World’. What lovely words in these songs, which the members truly enjoyed singing.

Thank you Norma Veldtman for the quiz on nursery rhymes. Norma would read a line in the middle and members had to tell her the name of the nursery rhyme. What fun – everyone actually did very well.

There were three demonstrations at this month’s meeting. Alice Glenister showed how to sew puff cushions, which are very attractive. Yvonne Dixie demonstrated how easy it was to make a small clutch bag. Janet Jackman demonstrated how to make wine coasters. Everyone learnt something new and not at all complicated but fun.
