Golfers’ win sees them top league log

The Friday 9 hole Sundowner once again delivered high points for the winner, with Nigel Johnston carding 23 points,

AMANZIMTOTI Golf Club men’s A team played their league match against Umhlali away, and came away with a superb win, finishing with an 8.5/3.5 score line.

The boys got off to a great start in the foursomes, ending 3/1 up, with Mike Igesund and his partner Bester Swart, Janco Vogel and Michael Dunlop and Kalvin van Rensburg paired with Jan McDermott all recording wins.

In the afternoon the wind picked up to gale-force, making for tough conditions. Mike Igesund, the regular team banker, put the first points on the board, winning 5/3, while Dunnies and Bester both went down to their opponents, 3/1 and 6/4 respectively. Janco again delivered the goods with a fine 4/3 victory, while Sean Roberts carried on with his usual strategy of being three down, then coming back to win 3/2. Jan won his game 5/3, Kalvin won 5/4 and Mark Cowie got a well fought half.

This puts Toti on top of the log, and means they will play in the promotion relegation fixture on 13 August which will hopefully see them reinstated into premier league for next year’s league.

The men’s B team had a bye on Sunday, but the Allerton boys hosted Umkomaas at home for their final round of league fixtures, with the games played in perfect conditions.

Wesley Dalton and Nico Vogel put the first points on the board winning two up, Mike Halse and Peter Tiearney brought in the second point with a good 3/2 win, and Murray Dalton and Jason van Rensburg added the third with one of their opposition being a no-show. The only team not making points were the big guns Eugene Mbambo and Ronnie Nair who were on the receiving end of a 6/5 smashing.

Toti team needed at least four points to secure the win going into the afternoon games, and Wesley delivered the opening point with a solid 3/2 win, followed by Nico who finished off with some good touches to win 4/2. Mike carried his bad touches over to the afternoon and was rewarded with a one down loss. Peter managed to scratch out an one-up win, while Jason made birdie on the 18th to secure his half point. Murray had a walkover from his non-existent opponent, while Eugene came back from three down to beat his opponent 2/1. Ronnie didn’t add to the scorecard, but nonetheless Toti finished up 8.5/3.5, and top of the league to boot.

On Wednesday the IPS competition was well supported with 28 players turning up. Hans Odendaal shot the lights out to win on 43 points, followed two shots back by Mike Tait with Dave Richardson in third place on 39. Friday’s nine hole sundowner once again delivered high points, with Nigel Johnston carding 23 points, followed by visitor Pat Fowler on 20, counting out D van Rensburg into third.

The women played their KZNLGA medal and putts on Saturday, with a rather small field present. Delene Berry played a solid round to take the silver division on 79 nett, while one of AGC’s newest members Francis Hoole had an absolute blinder to win the bronze division on 69 nett. Francis also broke the 100 for the first time, which is always exciting. In second place in the bronze division was Ina de Boer on 72 nett, and the least number of putts was won by Colleen Smit on 27.

Nearest the pin went to Aneska Dupont, and Aneska, Jacqui Porrill and Delene Berry all had two clubs.

As always, Toti Golf Club welcomes visitors to enjoy a round of golf on its magnificent course. Call the club on 031-902-4144.
