Another Naicker claims UGC golfing honour

Rob Mathias was the winner of the C division counting out Simon van den Bosch and Rob Finlay

By P Utter

CONGRATULATIONS to Viv Naicker on becoming Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) matchplay champion for 2017 over the weekend.

Viv played his brother, Dean, who is UGC’s strokeplay champion for 2017.

There has always been friendly rivalry between the brothers but young Tash Naicker will be making his move one of these days and will give dad, Viv and uncle, Dean a run for their money. Good golfing must run in the family. Well done, you are both true and worthy champions of UGC.

A huge thank you to all the guys who supported the Sanlam Cancer Challenge last Saturday, 27 May. Unfortunately, the date clashed with the some of the women playing inter region last weekend but the girls will be playing their challenge shortly. Winner of the A division was Saga Reddy with 42 points, runners-up were Viv Naicker in second place with Dean Naicker in third spot, both with 37 points. B division winner was club captain, Barrie Taylor, on a count out from Tom Naicker in second place, both on 41 points. Nelson Moonsamy counted out both Derek Airey and Chris Pillay, all three on 38 points. Rob Mathias was the C division winner, counting out Simon van den Bosch and Rob Finlay, all three on 36 points. Congratulations to all the winners. There were three two-clubs as well, all on the fourth hole, from Dean Naicker, Dave Mulroy and Rob Finlay.

Wednesday’s individual stableford competition welcomed Tony and Pat Bush, visitors from the Blue Marlin Hotel and Richard Cele to the competition, which was won by Strand Striker, Garth Wilyman on 43 points followed by Michelle van der Merwe in second spot, counting out Cameron Smith into third place, both on 40 points. Nelson Moonsamy took fourth prize with 38 points.

Sunday, 28 May was the Sunday ‘bash’ which had 19 players in the field, the best so far. In first place Mlu with 39 points, second was Sipho with 38 points and third Lindani with 37 points. All the players enjoyed a sponsored braai afterwards, thanks to James Dlamini. The next Sunday ‘bash’ will be on Sunday, 11 June which anyone is welcome to join. The players meet under the ‘lapa’ (weather permitting) at 10am.

Also on last Sunday was inter region – three UGC women are members of both the Umdoni team (Michelle van der Merwe) and the Mkhula teams (Natalie Singer and Sabiha Bacaus) but unfortunately only the Mkhula team will go through to the next round. The match was played at the beautiful Prince’s Grant Golf Club up on the North Coast – lots of travelling for both teams. Well done to the Mkhula team and commiserations to the Umdoni team.

On a special golfing note – best of luck goes with Michelle van der Merwe and Bryony Rogers from UGC and Brenda Morgan and Lass Davies from Amanzimtoti Golf Club as they travel to Gauteng to play in the nationals being played at Randpark Golf Club on both their courses, Fire Thorn and Bush Willow next week. Good luck, travel safely and know that UGC is holding thumbs. Do UGC proud – no pressure!

Next Saturday, 3 June is Toyota monthly medal mug for all members, with social golf on Sunday, 4 June. Call the office on 039-973-1042 to book a tee time on Sunday and to make sure there are carts available. An early reminder that the alliance league game will be played on Saturday, 10 June.

The Sardine Run is now only two weeks away – if you still want to play, logon to www.sardinegolf.co.za for an entry form. For all UGC information, go to www.umkomaasgolf.co.za
