Inaugural Urban Challenge MTB race entices trail runners

On Saturday, which is the day Mambas have their club ride, saw about 25 riders leave Illovo Business Park and head for the hills.

MANY mountain bike races are now including a trail run for runners, which is exactly what Amanzimtoti Cycling Club is doing for its annual club race being held on Sunday, 23 July.

The Dafco Urban Challenge will be a lap event around Hutchison Park, each lap being 8km.

Runners are invited to run the route after the cyclists have competed in either the two, three or four lap challenge. Online entries are now open on www.roag.co.za.

On Saturday, the Mambas’ club ride saw about 25 riders leave Illovo Business Park to head for the hills. They slowly split into three groups: the racing snakes followed by the slipstream and then fattis and monis.

All three groups ride different distances but meet up at the end to enjoy a coffee and compare rides. This Saturday the club ride at Toti Sports Centre will try out the new 8km track which club chairman, Barry Walker has meticulously prepared for all to use. The ride starts at 7am, followed by a bacon and egg roll with a cup of coffee. For R40, why not join in? RSVP Barry Walker on 083-459-8253 for catering purposes.

At the Sappi Karkloof Classic Trail Festival, one of the province’s toughest mountain bike races, took place on Sunday where Toti cyclists again did the club proud. Brennan Anderson managed a remarkable fourth overall and second in his age category. With temperatures showing 1° and ice on the ground, riders knew they were in for a gruelling ride. Luckily, the route was new and the dreaded Lebanon climb had been halved. It was still punishing but exhilarating at the same time. With good single track, forestry roads and loads of switch-backs, all contestants were happy it hadn’t rained as in previous years.

60km results:

  • Brennan Anderson 2.42.36,
  • Zane Raw 4.17.03,
  • Wayne Sives 4.48.18,
  • Imka Potgieter 4.58.11.

40km results:

  • Tyrone Pinnoy 3.39.27,
  • Gareth Weitz 4.09.51.

20km results:

  • Casey Victor 2.07.20.
