Alec’s men clinch full house in mutton bowls

Jane Coetzee was not present to win the attendance draw, so the pot rises to R850 next week

By Jack E Toucher

IT was another very active weekend for the members of Amanzimtoti Bowling Club, with TGIF on Friday evening, the men’s and women’s league on Saturday and the muttons on Sunday.

It was an extra-special mutton this month as Warwick Finance, one of the club’s major sponsors was present to provide extra incentives in the form of great prizes.

First among the men’s teams were Linden Cooper, Ray Robinson, Barry Buckland and Gustav Somers. Duncan Wright, Owen Turner, Trevor Zulch and Neil Wiggill were runners-up, and second session went to Ian Crouch, Lofty van Tonder, Mike Roberts and Barry Bush.

Winners on the women’s side were Pam Chalder-Royle, Jenny Delport, Jackie Holdrick and Lesley Stephens-Viviers; Julie Sutherland, Nita Meumann, Amanda Ninow and Karen Shepherd were second, with Lynn Joubert, Heather Cooper, Lys McDonald and Kathy Cox taking second session.

The five lucky winners of the Warwick draw were Michelle Pitchers, Martin Birch, Bobby Henderson, Yvonne Wright and Leigh Callaghan, and Guelfo Cobianchi won the 100 board.

One team was lucky enough to score a full house during the game. It was Alec Stirzaker, Mike Groom, Boet Els and Mike Pitchers. Alec then rounded off the day by also getting a wrong bias – quite a record.

In the first round of the women’s interclub league first division, Toti A beat Umhlali A at Durban BC 3-2; second division Toti B beat Westville’s A team at Westville C.C 5-0; third division Toti C lost to Hillcrest B at Stella Park 0-5; and eight division Toti D beat Wentworth B 5-0 at Toti.

In round five of the men’s interclub league second division, Toti A beat Hillary B 5-2 at Toti; second division Toti B lost 0-7 to Stella Park B at Stella Park; third division Toti C lost to Lahee Park B 2-5 at Lahee Park; sixth division Toti D lost 2-3 to Woodlands A at Woodlands; sixth division Toti E beat Le Domaine B 5-0 at Le Domaine; seventh division Toti F beat Wentworth B 5-0 at Wentworth.

At TGIF the 100 board was won by the ‘Damagers’. Jane Coetzee was not present to win the attendance draw, so the pot rises to R850, and as Martin Birch was unable to find the right key in the key draw that pot rises to R3,090 next time.

Good bowling to the club’s trio in the PN qualifying masters which takes place from Friday to Sunday, 2 to 4 June – Greg McLeod in the men’s open at Toti, Jeanne Alexander and Julie Sutherland in the women’s open at Northlands, and Robyn Hutton in seniors also at Northlands. Markers are urgently required at ABC on those days.

There’s still space for a few more teams for the women’s winter tournament on Thursday, 22 June and Friday, 23 June, and for new or old items for the winter table.

The new date for potjie day will be Sunday, 29 October, so diarise that early as it’s always a fun day. The draws for the traditional potjie day leg of lamb and the booze hamper will be done at the next mutton on 25 June, so get tickets as these prizes are worth winning.

Birthday greetings go to Errol du Plessis and Vish Studinski this week, and get well wishes to all members who are not in the best of health.

Finally, it was with great sadness that members heard of the sudden death of Peter Snyman who was an enthusiastic member of the club up to the beginning of this year when he and his wife Gaynor moved to Mossel Bay. Thoughts go out to Gaynor and the family at this time.
