Toti rugby takes four from four

The team continued their winning ways on Wednesday with a 19 – 12 victory over Reservoir Hills Rhinos.

DESPITE some close, nail-biting games, it was a good week for the Ethekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti Rugby Club as the teams took all four games.

First team:

Amanzimtoti hosted a strong Varsity College team boosted by some Sharks contracted players on Friday night at Hutchison Park.

The visitors certainly came prepared and put Toti under pressure throughout the game. Toti took the first half 3-0 with a penalty from outside centre Wimpie Pretorius who in the second half slotted another successful penalty to take Toti to a 6-0 final result. Toti did a lot of the playing, but the VC defensive efforts kept the Toti terriers out. Defending the six-point lead in the dying moments of the game gave the visitors a sniff that they could go for a win and they attacked the line but sheer guts and heart kept the visitors out to keep the Toti terriers’ unbeaten record against VC at home intact.

Man of the match went to Wing, Chad Fisher and Flank, Kevin Buck.

Second team:

In a battle for third place on the log, Toti was first on the board with a penalty kick by Jason Hienz.

Varsity College replied with a try to take the lead 5–3. Shortly before the half time break, it was Toti’s scrumhalf, Kyle Gerhard who crossed the line to score. Jason Heinz converted it to take the score to 10-5 for the home side. A later penalty by Jason Heinz saw the score climb to 13-5. VC then scored to make it 13-10 before centre Jacques Blignaut had the final say when going over for a try that was also converted. This left the final score at 20–10 to the home side. Man of the match up front was captain Gerhard Ingram and at the back it was flyhalf Darryn Nayman. The A Bomb award went to prop Travis Clarke.

Third team:

The thirds took on a Harlequins team on Wednesday, 3 May that saw fit to play an unregistered player who was one of Toti’s outstanding first team players in 2016.

Nevertheless, in a tightly contested affair, the Toti ballies came out victors with a score of 29–22 to remain at the top of the log.

Fourth team:

The fourth team continued their winning ways on Wednesday with a 19–12 victory over the Reservoir Hills Rhinos.

It was Leonardo Steenkamp and JP du Toit who crossed the white wash and Ruan Voster who converted twice.

The game was very tight in the first half with Toti going into the half 10–7 down. The team remains on the top of the log.

The next games sees the first and second team up against South Coast Warriors at Hutchison Park on Friday, 12 May with kick-off scheduled for 7pm and 8.30pm respectively. The third team will travel to Ogwini Bafana on Saturday, 13 May with kick-off scheduled for 3.30pm. The U20 team will host Crusaders at Hutchison Park on Saturday, 13 May with kick-off scheduled for 12.30pm. This game may change to a later time.

Once again, a big thank you to all sponsors and spectators and the club looks forward to seeing everyone at the next round of fixtures.
