Cycling club cancels 69er in favour of MTB race

Well done to all the competitors who raced their hearts out on Sunday at the Tinman Triathlon.

AMANZIMTOTI Cycle Club’s chairman, Barry Walker has been extremely busy extending the MTB trail at Amanzimtoti Sports Centre to 8kms and had a work party this past Saturday to clean out and shape new switchbacks.

An overwhelming 30-plus members came to help with spades and rakes in hand.

The club has decided not to host the famous road race, Toti69’er this year, but host a mountain bike event instead. The inaugural event will be known as ‘Toti Urban Challenge’ and this is being held at the Sports Centre on 23 July. It’s going to be a lap event with three races – 16km race (two laps), 24km race (three laps) and 32km race (four laps). Amanzimtoti Sports Centre will host a trail run after the cycle club’s event so it’s a day you do not want to miss out on.

A fantastic group of 22 Toti Mambas braved the cool autumn morning on Saturday down at Illovo Business Park to ride the hills of Illovo. With Sani2C less than three weeks away, some were getting their last few training rides in while others were just enjoying riding their MTBs.

On Sunday, a few Mambas headed up to Baynesfield, just 23km from Pietermaritzburg and had a really fun ride. Dirt roads, jeep track, fantastic single track and super friendly people at the club offering excellent facilities for visitors. The Roadies used last weekend to get some last-minute training in before the Tour Durban that takes place next week. Good luck to those who have entered.

Well done to all the competitors who raced their hearts out on Sunday at the Tinman Triathlon. A couple of young Mambas, namely Anton (10) and Franco (11) Clayton competed in the mini-series in what can only be described as ideal racing conditions – flat sea, no wind and warm temperatures. Anton managed to pip his older brother in the run and came in the top 10 in a respectable time of 34.11. Franco, who was never far behind but trailed in the run, finished in a time of 37.06.

With another long weekend coming up, why not go down and see what the new track at Hutchison Park is all about. Take your partner, your children, dog, bike, or just yourself to see how challenging the new track is, just not your vehicle. Recently there has been a person in a Jeep trying out his 4×4 skills who damaged a bridge and signs. It’s open to everyone who enjoys the outdoors, just not 4x4s, motorbikes, quadbikes or anything motorised.
