Hat-trick of wins for Toti RC teams

The first and second teams will take on Richards Bay on Saturday, 1 April at Hutchison Park with kick-off scheduled for 2pm and 3.30pm respectively.

THE weekend saw Ethekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti Rugby Club produce some good results, but none better than the U20 team.

First team

Saturday, 25 March saw the first team start the season off against a never-say-die Fidelity Security Jaguars Warriors team at Growthpoint Stadium in the Wahl Bartman Club rugby day.

In a game like the one played, it is very difficult to single out players when everyone is working hard to get their hands on the ball. There were times when the Toti outfit were not clinical and spoilt a number of scoring opportunities. The defence was out of the top draw and because of this, the Jaguars team were prevented from putting any points on the board.

The final result was a resounding 69–0 victory for Toti after the team ran in 11 tries. Scorers on the day were Zander Erasmus, Ryno Els, Conrad Mostert, Kevin Buck (2), Mike Uppink, Maritz Cloete, Levan Killian, Juan Niewoudt and Wimpi Pretorius scored two tries and also converted seven of the tries.

The Fidelity Security man of the match award went to Mike Uppink.

Second team

In wet conditions, the second team also faced Jaguars on Kings Park 1. The first five minutes saw a spirited Jaguars team attack the Toti line, but some good defense and structure kept them out for most of the day. Toti then started to build momentum and self-belief saw them run in a number of good tries throughout, to end the game with a winning score of 48-5. Although it was a great performance, there is still a lot of hard work ahead. Try scorers were Daniel van Rooyen, Fredi Janse Van Rensburg with the try of the day, Gerhard Ingram, Sean Mcclean and Dylan Kelly scored a hat-trick with his third try coming from great interplay from a line-out between him and Travis Clarke.

Forwards man of the match went to captain and eighth man, Gerhard Ingram. Backline player of the match went to outside centre, Tyron Brand. The special ‘A BOM’ team reward went to hooker, Dylan Kelly for his hard work at training during the week and his hat trick.

U20 team

It is said that this was the game of the weekend when the Toti boys played at home against Varsity College on Friday night, 24 March.

The more fancied VC team must have pitched up thinking five points were up for the taking, after they secured some resounding victories leading into this match.

The Toti boys were soon under the cosh and a big score was on the cards and the U20 team could easily have given up at this stage, but what came next can only be attributed to the character and self-belief that the youngsters display. Toti fought back and when the final whistle blew, the Toti outfit won the game 13-12.

Ethekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti Rugby thanks its supporters for supporting the teams over the weekend.

Upcoming fixtures see the U20 boys take on another strong club in Durban Collegians away on Wednesday, 29 March with kick-off scheduled for 6.30pm. The first and second teams will take on Richards Bay on Saturday, 1 April at Hutchison Park with kick-off scheduled for 2pm and 3.30pm respectively. With a number of the first team squad attending a wedding, it will put the club’s depth to the test.
