NEWS just to hand that a few weeks ago, a number of Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) men members trooped up to Nelspruit to play in the Nomads nationals tournament, a rather prestigious event which every Nomad member in the country looks forward to playing in.

This tournament is played all over South Africa every year in different cities, towns and areas, so the build-up and organisation of such a tournament is intense.

Two UGC members were in a team, Mike Cromhout and Derek Airey and their team finished second overall out of all the teams in the country. This is pretty special considering the enormity and amount of players taking part. Well done guys, even if the club is a tad late in congratulating your team’s effort.

Wednesday, 22 March was the normal individual stableford and it was John Thompson on a winning streak again, taking the first prize with a score of 39 points, closely followed by Michelle van der Merwe on 38 points and Dave Kemp in third spot on 37 points. With the competition as close as this one was at the end – just one shot separating the players – it just goes to show how important a made putt can be.

Saturday, 25 March dawned dark and stormy with rain threatening the whole day. The Strand Strikers managed to get through their medal competition pretty much unscathed earlier on in the morning but not so lucky were the afternoon players. But being the intrepid lot that they are, they soldiered on and although the rain did fall in fits and starts’, they did finish. Well done to you all.

The competition was a 4BBB stableford and it was Mike Cromhout and Michelle van der Merwe who came in a bit damp on a winning score of 48 points, followed by club captain, Barrie Taylor and Dave Kemp in second place on a score of 45 points. In third place was KZNLGU silver champion, Sabiha Bacaus and her partner Jacques Hulley on 43 points. All the side comps were carried over to next weekend but ‘hats off’ to all players who went out to play.

This Saturday, 1 April is the Toyota Malanda monthly medal and also on the same day, it’s the Sharks vs Lions rugby match at 5.30pm. Since there are both sets of fans at Umkomaas, this is going to be a humdinger of a match and all rugby enthusiasts are welcome to support their team in the pub, exercising their elbows. Sunday, 2 April will, for the most part, be a recovery day, depending on which rugby team supported but there will be social golf throughout the morning. All are welcome to call the office on 039-973-1042 to book a time.

Again a reminder of Sonny’s fundraising day on Saturday, 29 April. The time sheet is in the office so give Sonny a call and book your tee time. Prizes and so on are still needed. Sonny will be happy to hear from you. It was nice to see the craft market supported last Sunday – bear in mind that the next craft market day will be on Easter Sunday, 16 April instead of the last Sunday of the month. There will be a reminder in this report closer to the time.
