AGC’s Allerton golfers drub Central Durban foes

Results from other competitions played during the week saw Wednesday's IPS attract a fair-sized field.

AMANZIMTOTI Golf Club’s men’s Allerton league team made short work of their matches on Sunday, 26 February, giving Central Durban a drubbing that they will not forget for a very long time.

The match was played at home in almost perfect conditions, and even Tommy McNaughton’s ‘sh’t left’ off the first tee box could not hold back a rampant Toti side.

Tommy and Bobby Milne, fuelled by Bobby thinking the work was all his to do on the day, cruised to a 5/4 demolition win against their opponents in the morning foursome round. Ian Bender and Jason Moriarty went one better, smashing their way to a 6/5 win. The two Peters, Tiearney and Dalton then upped the ante and annihilated their opposition by 7/6.

The only team unable to record a win were the pairing of Eugene Mbambo and Nico Vogel who lost their foursome match on the last hole, finishing one down.

The afternoon singles saw the boys all taking carts as dehydration symptoms started showing, not surprising at all after the Saturday night celebrations. Tommy was the only member of the team not to make any points in the singles matches. He earned himself the dubious honour of guarding the pig until the next league match. Overall result: Toti 9.2 to Central Durban’s 2.5.

The A side had a bye. Apologies from the scribe who got that all wrong, but it would appear that the KZNGU website league fixture list is not up to date.

The B team boys sent in an one liner to describe their match. They played against Ethekwini at Papwa and got hammered 10.5 to 1.5. Nothing more needs to be said.

Saturday’s King of the Coast Golf Challenge was a major success, with over 150 players turning out to compete. For the next year to come, the PC’s will hold the title of victors, having despatched all other contenders to the title. For the record the women’s team, bolstered slightly by a few hairy men, came stone last, if you could pardon the pun.

The club’s deepest gratitude to all the sponsors, players, supporters, workers and obviously the organisers for a well run event. And roll on next year’s competition day, so the women can make a comeback.

Results from other competitions played during the week saw Wednesday’s IPS attract a fair-sized field. The top three places were decided by a count out, all on 40 points. Norbert Dupont took first place, Brian Stewart second and Piet Bredenhann third, with George Glaves fourth on 39.

Friday’s nine-hole sundowner was small only 19 players, and Karl Beck went home with the meat, winning on 21 points, with Brian Steward one shot adrift. There was a small competition on Saturday afternoon for those not involved in the King of the Coast, and Dave Richardson and Pat Stevenson took top spot on 49 betterball points.
