UGC’s 2017 club champs decided

Many congratulations to all the winners and the members who took part in the championships

UMKOMAAS Golf Club’s club championships of 2017 were played last weekend in unbelievably hot and humid conditions on both Saturday and Sunday, with a little relief from the wind towards the end of Sunday.

Although the field was a tad smaller than in past years (due to the hot weather in March), the competitiveness of the players was outstanding.

There will be a couple of new names engraved on the trophies this year but many congratulations to all the players for their support of this important annual event on the club’s calendar.

The results of club championships 2017 women’s divisions are:

Women’s silver division, Sabiha Bacaus and in the bronze division, Lesa Vergottini. Congratulations to both, they are both worthy winners in their respective divisions. Well done to all the women who played, getting up early and to the club on time to tee off with the sparrows.

There was a tussle in all the men’s divisions with very close scores all round. Many congratulations to the following members on becoming the Umkomaas Club men’s champions for 2017:

A division champion, Dean Naicker with his brother, Viv Naicker as runner-up; B division champion, John Westwood with Nelson Moonsamy close behind as runner-up; C division champion, Simon van den Bosch with Keith Vergottini as runner-up. It was a good day for the Vergottini family.

Many congratulations to all the winners and the members who took part in the championships for their support and sportsmanship throughout the weekend.

Garth Mulroy played in the Tshwane Open in Pretoria last weekend and although on Thursday and Friday he had great rounds of 67 and 68, unfortunately the wheels fell off on the last two days. He shot a 75 and a 76 on Saturday and Sunday respectively, putting him at T76 on a +2 for the tournament. The one good thing about Garth is he manages to hold it all together on the first two days where it counts. Hopefully in the future he can hang on for the whole four days, which would be fantastic. All the luck for your next tournament, Garth, you know that the Umkomaas and Scottburgh golfing fraternity is behind you all the way, no matter what your results are. Good luck and play well.

Saturday, 11 March will be the Toyota monthly medal with social golf on Sunday, 12 March.

KidzGolf will resume this Saturday, 11 March. As always Devlyn will at the club to welcome well young newcomers who wish to learn more about golf.

The Geriatrics play on Tuesdays and Fridays only, meeting on the first tee box at 6.30am. Green fees are reduced for this group and anyone may join them on these days. Contact Graham on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740.

Dont’ forget Sonny’s fundraising day in April. He still needs prizes and/or donations for this event. The club needs the support of all its members to make this a fabulous day. It’s the only day in the year where members are approached to help, be it monetary or by supplying prizes. It’s for the club.

Friday afternoons is six-pin, starting after 2.30pm. This is a fun afternoon for all, bashing that little white ball around for six holes and at the end of it all, an ice cold beer. It’s a wonderful way to kickstart the weekend, keeping the throats lubricated in support of the Sharks who play the Waratahs at Kings Park on Saturday.
