IT would seem the ‘rain gods’ have been kind to all and sundry once again, with good showers and soaking rain, without stretching water resources to keep the golf courses in a reasonable condition during the dreadful heat waves being experiencing over the last few days.

The latest rain has been wonderful, although a lot more is required in the dams which all hope and pray will happen soon.

Wednesday welcomed visitors Peter Bond and Bill Nixon to Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) and competition which was the individual stableford, and as always, the competition was as competitive as ever. Dave Kemp took first prize on 40 points with Simon van den Bosch and one of the Strand Strikers fighting out for second and third spot, on a count out, both individuals had 39 points.

Saturday’s competition, the first of the alliance league matches, was well supported by all members and their relevant teams, some having played industrial league in the morning and managing to get back to the club to play in the afternoon. Thanks to members of the Dream Team and the Blue Brothers for their commitment to participate in the alliance league. Welcome to the new team in the competition – the ‘Italians plus One’. Any other teams who wish to play in this league should chat to Sonny. Visitors Dave Rickards, Jeff Pennell and Sifiso Khoza were warmly welcomed to the competition, which was played in extremely hot and humid weather.

Congratulations to the Blue Brothers – Devlyn Fraser, Nelson Moonsamy, Saga Reddy and Mike Cromhout on taking the first prize with their 91 points and in second spot were The Chancers – John Thompson, Mike Harvard, Graham Coxell and Dave Mulroy with 89 points. Well done to all the players who went out in such ‘yucky’ conditions – you’re all winners.

The jackpot was scooped up by Mike Cromhout with 11 great points, while Jacques Kirstein snatched up the hidden birdie kitty on the first hole. There were three two-clubs as well, Devlyn Fraser on the fourth; Dave Rickards on the ninth and Mike Cromhout on the 13th. Liv Mazzaro had already left the building, so the attendance draw will be carried over to this weekend.

This weekend, Saturday, 25 February, is the 4BBB competition with social golf on Sunday, 26 February. The craft market and car-boot sale is back in the car park of the club on Sunday, 26 February – go on down and browse around. You may find something you’ve been looking for, right on your door-step.

Staying with Saturday, it’s the closing date for club champs, so if you haven’t put your name down to play, do so soon. Your handicaps for champs will be taken from 1 March, irrespective of what they are on the day of champs which is Saturday, 4 March and Sunday, 5 March.

Bearing in mind that there is composite league on Sunday, 26 February – good luck to the guys playing in composite league – and club champs the following weekend, Nelson’s Sunday School Bash will start again on Sunday, 12 March at 11am. The result of last Sunday’s compo was H Zama and P Shinga tying for first place with 37 points followed by Lindani Mthiyane in third place. Contact Nelson on 082-428-9000.

UGC’s ‘Gerries’, who play on Tuesdays and Fridays, are still going strong. They meet at 6.30am on these days only. Anyone who wishes to play early to avoid the heat, is welcome to join them. Reduced green fees apply when you play with this group. Contact Graham on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740.

It was good to see new faces at the club on Saturday mornings when the KidzGolf meet at 8am. Any youngster who wishes to learn how to play golf will find Devlyn, Mike or Lindani are all willing to help and assist anyone with their coaching expertise. Call the club for more details on 039-973-1042.

Sonny still needs prizes and/or donations for his fundraising day on Saturday, 29 April. Thank you to all members who have put their name forward to assist with prizes and so on, but Sonny would really like to make this a bumper year but he can only do this with your help.
